4th Floor Common Room: Saturday Morning (all morning)

Claire woke early by default, even after a long party, but she was thoughtful enough to quit her room as soon as she did, leaving the roomie to sleep.

Still in pyjamas and a big fluffy dressing gown, she curled up on the couch with cereal and chocolate milk, and switched the TV on to AMSF

It was the recent one with the really bad theme tune,but Claire wasn't that fussy.

Mac nodded, spooning coffee grounds into the pot. "Parties here, usually better like that than parties back at home are, in my experience anyway."

"Lots of things are better here," Claire observed. "What's home, for you?"

"Neptune, California," Mac replied as she fiddled with her drink making. "You?"

"Odessa, Texas," Claire replied. "Just a normal high school in a normal town."

This, she felt, was a relevent detail.

"No high school is completely normal," Mac remarked with a chuckle.

"Ours tried," Claire said firmly.

"And now you're at one that tries to be exactly the opposite." Mac grinned. "Nice change?"

"Yeah," Claire admitted. "Didn't expect it would be."

"Neither did I." Mac smiled, poking at the kettle. "This place, was just a little bit of a shock to the system."

"Your hometown's normal too?" Claire asked. "How'd you get here?"

"The prospectus rather glosses over that aspect," Mac replied. "I just wanted to get as far away from Neptune as I reasonably could, this seemed like a good choice."

"It was kind of vague, wasn't it?" Claire agreed. "This school is far away from anywhere."

"Oh yeah." Mac smirked. "School for 'special' kids. My parents assumed that meant bright. Worked out once I got here it means a little more than that..."

Claire cleared her throat, amused.

"I don't even think it said that when my parents found it. It was just the only one accepting mid-semester applications."

She hadn't really thought about why.

Mac smiled, finally pouring hot water into the pot. "That's as good a reason to pick here, as any I suppose."

"You must've arrived just as I was leaving," she remarked.

"Went home for the summer?"

"Just the second half," Mac replied. "Needed a bit of a break away from here, just for a while."

Claire tilted her head, curious, but didn't ask the obvious question.

"Did you have a good time in Neptune?"

"It... was Neptune," Mac said, sending her a wry smile. "I've never really liked it there anyway."

"I'm kind of glad to be back."

"Well, it is great here," Claire agreed.

"It has its moments," Mac agreed. It also has times when its less good, but Mac was looking for the upbeat here.

She poured her coffee into a thermos. "You want any?" she offered.

Claire shook her head.

"I'm good. Thanks."

Mac shrugged, pouring the last of it in. "Your loss," she said with a smile.


"Anyway, I have to get going. First day of library aide, wouldn't want to be late."

"Sure," Claire said, nodding to her. "Have a good day."

"You too," Mac returned, and with a quick smile at Claire she grabbed her drink and turned to leave.
