Jim wasn't what anyone would call a social person by any stretch of the imagination. He hadn't met any of the new students in the almost two weeks since he and Lana had returned from their mini-break. So he was now at least making the effort, plopping down on a couch and quickly discovering a replay of the Super Series game from last night.

He wasn't sure whether to cheer for Canada or Russia at first, but decided he should at least show some solidarity with their neighbours to the north and was soon shouting the occasional encouragement for the boys in red and white.

Hoshi was feeling a little claustrophobic, so she decided to leave her room and see what was going on in the much larger common room.

Jim offered a smile and a little wave at the new girl. See, he could be nice and non-threatening and harmless.

Hoshi smiled back tentatively. Her social skills still could use some work, so she remained silent.

"They're tied," Jim filled in helpfully. "Middle of the third."

"Who's playing?" asked Hoshi. She wasn't up to speed on her 21st century sports.

"Canada and Russia. World junior men's." Jim didn't seem to mind providing this information too much.

Hoshi watched the screen, her sharp hearing picking out the voices of the Russian team in the background.

"Jim, by the way," he introduced himself after a minute or two of silence.

"I'm Hoshi," she said. She caught something else said by the Russian team and looked back at the television. "I think he's going to regret using words like that when someone translates for them," she added, cringing.

Jim laughed a little. "What'd he say?"

"I'm not sure if I should repeat it. It wasn't very nice," said Hoshi.

"I think I can figure it out anyway," Jim chuckled. "You speak Russian?"

"Yes, plus some other languages," said Hoshi. "German, French, Italian, Spanish, Mandarin, Hindi... I tend to pick up new languages very quickly."

Lana waved at her as well. "Hey, welcome."

"Hello," Hoshi said back with a weak smile.

"I don't think we've met," Lana said. "I'm Lana. How are you settling into Fandom so far?"

"My name is Hoshi," she said. "It's been very interesting, but I survived the first week."

"It's a pretty unique place," Lana agreed. "But surviving the first week is a good thing."

"Especially when someone drops you in the wrong century without any warning," said Hoshi. No, she's not bitter. Really.

"Oh wow," Lana said. "That's really tough. Are you from the future or the past?"

Yeah, only in Fandom would that be a reasonable question.

"The future," said Hoshi. "2144, to be exact."

"Wow," Lana said again. "This has to be quite a shock for you. If there's anything I can help you with I'd be glad to. Any time."

"Thanks," said Hoshi. "Are the classes here always so... strange?"

"Pretty much, yes," Lana said. "But they can be pretty amazing too. I learned a whole bunch of creature languages in one."

"I heard about that class," said Hoshi. "I'm taking Communication and it hasn't been so bad, though the teacher seems to like non-verbal forms."
