Fourth floor common room, Tuesday afternoon

In an effort to keep himself from dwelling on things he didn't want to dwell on, Dean had abandoned his room and was sitting on the couch in the common room, listlessly flipping through the channels on tv. He paused on one of those court shows and shook his head after watching for a few minutes. "Okay, now those people are freaks."

Isabel was also not dwelling on things she could be dwelling on. Hence, common room and hopefully a distraction. "Five words," she said, coming in taking a seat. "The gene pool needs chlorine."

"I hear that," Dean said.

"Seriously, nobody should be that stupid. What are they arguing about today?" Isabel asked as she tossed a piece of chocolate towards Dean. "Here. It help keep your brain cells from dying from exposure to the stupid."

"Thanks," Dean said, shoving the entire piece in his mouth at once. "Something about a coin on Ebay, I dunno."

"Thrilling," she said, nibbling a piece of her own. "That's what happens when you buy from dealers that don't have a good rating."

"You gotta have some common sense. If something sounds too good to be true it probably is." Not that Dean was thinking of things other than the court case they were watching. Nope.

"Damn straight," Isabel nodded, also not thinking about anything other then the court case. She sighed and opened another piece of chocolate. "Should I ask how your weekend was? Or are you going with the tried and true, I was in my room studying all weekend, I don't care what the squirrels say."

"Oh I absolutely was. But some idiot named Alec who thought he was a model was running around getting lucky with his brother's girlfriend."

Isabel held out the bag of chocolate to Dean. He needed it more. "Alec had good taste?"

Dean took a handful of the chocolate with a wordless nod of thanks. "Oh, I can't fault Alec the model's taste. But it makes things a lot more difficult now."

"If it's Sam? I don't think he was playing solitare all weekend," she pointed out. "So he really has no right to say anything. Anything else? Can I interest you in a cruise on the River Denial? The water's fine and there's free sunscreen."

"Sammy and Dawn will be fine," Dean said firmly. He'd make sure of it if he had to. He sighed and took another bite of chocolate and glanced at Isabel ruefully. "Does that cruise cover best friends who take off with nothing but a note left behind?"

For both their sakes, Isabel hoped so. "That cruise covers whatever you want it to cover. You haven't heard from him at all?"

Lana waved at Isabel. "Hey," she said quietly.

"Hey Lana," Isabel replied with a small smile. She'd heard radio and could only imagine how Lana was feeling. "You doing okay?"

Lana shrugged. "As well as can be expected, I guess. With a little extra feeling stupid for really thinking this time would be different."

"It's not stupid to want things to work out," she said.

"Not stupid to want," Lana agreed. "Just stupid to believe that against all the evidence that they will."

She rubbed at her face. "It's just so hard."

Isabel sighed, feeling bad for Lana. "That's called taking a chance. Sometimes that's all you can do."

She nodded. "Yeah. And I did. And I don't regret it, because I had a wonderful year with him. Just... I wish..."

She shook her head. "If wishes were horses, right?"

"I know I'd have a stable full," she nodded, thinking of all the wishing she'd done over the last six months.

Lana nodded. "I know. You haven't exactly had an easy time of it."

Isabel shrugged, "It's over now. That's all that matters." She could deal with issues like a lingering fear of the dark. "Max and Michael are back. The whole alien princess thing is done. Life's pretty good at the moment, despite the weekend."

'You got caught in it too?" Lana asked. "What happened?"

"Wyatt and I thought we were engaged and were going to be married in two weeks," she said sheepishly.
