The Dorm Lawn: Monday afternoon

It was cold enough that Karal was bundled in a long cloak, and it was weird enough that he'd spent most of the day with Trenor - first hiding in the stables and then on a long, rambling ride around the island.

Now Trenor was grazing on the front lawn while Karal sat on the picnic table, holding his lead and staring vaguely off into space.

"I did tell John, but Uncle Luke figured me out," she said. "I'm not good enough to get away with that sort of thing. And it's kind of nice having him around when he knows what's happening."

"It's reassuring," he agreed absently, mind turning that over, and he turned to look at her, eyes a little wide. "Uncle Luke. Does that mean that the Luke we have now, is he your Luke? The one from your timeline?"

"Sort of, I think," she said slowly. "Our timing's a little off normally. The Luke that's here normally has gone through things in a year that took four in mine, so I don't think the timelines are ever going to match up exactly. But for the current Jedi Master running around now, he's got the same war on that I do, the same deaths have happened, my brother still needs a kick in the rear, and I'm 'Original Jaina'. It's a little bizarre."

Karal blinked at her. "I think this is making my head hurt," he decided, rubbing his temple, but he was smiling. "Your family is complicated."

"Oh, you have no idea," Jaina half-laughed. "On the bright side, if everyone remembers this, I probably don't have to worry about being secretive to keep the timeline from breaking. More."

Karal actually did have an idea, but he just smiled again. "And I suppose it might be fun to tease them all," he suggested.

"'So were you a circus clown in your reality, too?'" She paused. "I could pull thst on Gavin if I didn't have to worry about the other me getting demoted."

"I have spent too much time with John," he replied, making a face at her. "Five children. Gavin has five children."

Jaina grinned. "A little shocking, huh? I'm more surprised Aravis didn't kill her husband after the first child to have a second."

Karal nodded, then glanced at her, a little shyly. "She said I married them."

"Put all that practice to good use?" she said. "Is it weird to know?"

"Not weird," he replied. "It was an honour to know they wished me to perform the ceremony, even if never happened." He frowned. "Or will never happen."

"There's no guarantee it won't, you know," she said, looking back over at him. "I mean, my uncle ended up in the same situation in two realities."

"True. Very true," he said thoughtfully. "That is one that I will hope does happen."

Jaina raised her eyebrows at that. From where she stood, with the war at the forefront of her mind, it was kind of hard to see past that. "Really?"

"Really." Karal looked up into the sky. "It's hope for the future," he said softly. "With everything that's happened, there's hope. Aravis and Seely, everyone really, with children and families, no matter what else their life holds. Even knowing it's only possible...it's like being a given a gift."

The bad part was, she still wasn't seeing past it for herself. Oh, she was just going to have a fun time with all these issues. "You're right," she nodded. "It's good to know that no matter what else happens, they got it right somewhere."

"Sunlord willing, it will happen for all of us." Karal gave her a warm, happy smile. "Though hopefully not overnight. I'd like the next twenty years to actually take twenty years."

"It would be nice," she said. "I think mine might take about fifteen with the time differences. Do you think that'll do?"

"I think it will," he decided, still smiling. "As long as you're happy, it should do just fine."

"It's good to see you smiling," she said with a little smile, completely glossing over what he'd said.

"There's still so much to deal with," he told her, studying her carefully for a moment. "Everything that happened will be with us for a long time, but for right now, at this moment, I'm happy."

"Hopefully it's a really long moment," she said with a smile.
