He had a mid-term tomorrow. In cooking.

Thus, it made perfect sense to him, to wind up in the common room and attempting to cook.

Well.

Attempted to decide what he'd attempt to cook. Miss Lulu had said they couldn't use the recipes from class. This... would probably end badly.

"See? Totally an accomplishment," she grinned. "I'd ask if I could help, but, uh, you don't want me helping. I get bored and start mixing weird stuff together just to see what happens. Usually it's ... you know. Big inedible mess."

"You can help by eating it when it's done," Makoto said, smiling, "I think I made way too much for one person. And your method of cooking, well, seems a lot easier than following a recipe even if it does result in inedible messes."

"It's more fun," she laughed. "That's my problem, boredom. The recipe just seems like, well, you COULD do it that way, but where's the fun in that? And then later I think, I bet the fun is that you can actually eat the result instead of tossing it."

"Maybe," he said thoughtfully, "you should try getting other people to eat your concoctions. Then you can see their facial expressions. Which would, while not make your cooking better, at least be amusing. I keep burning things because I don't have the patience to take my time. Why can't food cook quicker?"

Rikku snickered at that. "You could always crank the heat? But that kinda makes it charred on the outside and gooey on the inside. Better to set a timer and go find something else to do. But then I get wrapped up and don't hear it so it's all burnt anyway."

"Things keep burning," he admitted, "so I've probably got the heat up way too high because they burn pretty quickly. Sometimes it turns out edible though so it's hard to say what will work and what won't."

"Hmmm. Do you have, like, a slow-cooker or anything?" Rikku asked, looking around at all the equipment. "I'd say turn the heat way down. Things that simmer end up tasting better and you can spend all that time making other things. Or adding bits that make it taste wonky, which is what I do." She blinked, and then her face lit up. "Ooooooh, is this for class? Is that Lulu's class?"

"...slow cooker?" Makoto asked plaintively. "I don't even know what that is." Though the name was pretty descriptive, so he could make a guess.

He smiled. "Yes, Miss Lulu's class. It's our mid-term tomorrow, so I wanted to make sure I can do my best for it. We had to pick our own recipes, which made it more complicated."

"It's ... uh." Rikku bit her lip. "It's a machina that you put everything in and it just sits there and cooks all day? Smells really neat. Ooooh, tell Lulu I said hi, okay? I keep meaning to go over for tea and I forget. Isn't she awesome?"

"Machina..." he wondered if that was brand or something, "do you see one here?" It wasn't like he'd recognize it.

Makoto laughed lightly. "I'll say hi for you, but you've got to tell me your name first."

"Oh. Uh. Machines. Sorry. Same thing. Just ... you know." She waved a little, vaguely. "It's Rikku. I'm a friend of hers from before."

He shrugged. "Okay," Makoto said, smiling, "I was just wondering if it was a brand name or something I hadn't heard of. And I'll make sure to tell her you say hi."

"I'm Makoto," he offered, "it's good to meet more people. I don't think I socialize enough, or something."

"Well, if you cook more, you should get plenty of people dropping in," Rikku grinned. "Great way to make friends. Uh. And no, just ... that's what things are called, where I'm from. I'm not really ... you know. From here, or whatever."
