The Roof, Saturday Evening

As 'she'd' promised the little girl, Makoto was up on the roof the moment it got dark and spent a bit of time getting the blankets set up and making sure the hot chocolate was ready.

And, yes, Makoto had remembered the marshmallows.

Settling down on the blankets, 'she' waited to see who'd show up. There was plenty to go around.

It took Lana a long time to make her way up all the stairs to the roof. She had to sit down and rest a few times. But finally she made it there and pushed open the door. "I a'membered!" she said triumphantly.

Makoto smiled brightly. "So you did," 'she' said, "did you have fun looking for birds?"

"Uh huh, and Karal let me ride his horse, Trenor!" Lana said excitedly.

That earned her a grin. "Is Trenor a nice horse?"

Lana nodded. "Yes, I love him very much."

"You fall in love quick," Makoto observed, patting the blankets, "come sit down and I'll get your hot chocolate ready. What does Trenor look like?"

"He's a horse that's this big." Lana jumped up in the air, spreading her arms out to show how big he was.

Then she scurried over to sit on the blankets. "He is a very very nice horse and he likes me and I love him and I climbeded all the way up the stairs and now I'm tired!"

"He sounds like a very big horse," Makoto said, "at least he's a nice one though."

The last bit made Makoto blink then feel silly for being surprised. 'She' hadn't even considered how hard the stairs would be for someone Lana's age. "There are rather a lot of stairs around here, aren't there? At least you can rest now."

"He is," Lana agreed. "Big and nice. And yes, lots and lots of stairs, but I can have hot chocolate, right, because I was a very good girl?"

"You were a very good girl," Makoto told her, reaching for one of the cups that 'she'd' brought up with her, "and yes, of course, you can have hot chocolate. Can you pass me the marshmallows? They're in the bag closest to you."

Lana struggled to wrap her arms around the bag and hand it to Makoto. "Here," she said finally, grinning cheerfully. "You are very nice to make me hot chocolate and let me watch the stars outside."

Makoto took the bag, and grinned at her. "Thank you for your help," Makoto said, "and for the compliment. I think you're very nice too."

'She' busied herself with pouring Lana a cup of hot chocolate for a moment. "Did you want to add your own marshmallows?"

Lana shook her head sadly. "Aunt Nell says no, because I could splash and burn myself. I'm still too little."

Then her face brightened. "But, I could pick out the one I want and then you could put it in!"

Awww.

"I wouldn't want you to burn yourself," Makoto said easily, and gently opened the bag of marshmallows, "but you can definitely pick out the one you want."

Lana looked at them carefully, remembering to look with her eyes and not with her hands. She bit her lip as she considered carefully, then finally smiled and pointed. "That one right there. Oh... Unless you want that one."

"You can have whichever one you want," Makoto assured Lana, leaning forward to make sure 'she' knew which one it was that had been pointed out, "this is the one you wanted, right?"

Lana nodded. "Yes, please, thank you."

Having made sure that it was the right marshmallow, Makoto carefully added it to the hot chocolate and presented the cup to Lana.

"There you go," 'she' said, "one hot chocolate for a good girl."

Lana beamed at her. "Thank you, Ma-ko-to."

That was probably the cutest way 'her' name had ever been pronounced.

"You're very welcome," Makoto said, "be careful with it though, you don't want to spill it."

"And blow on it carefully so I don't burn my mouth," Lana agreed.

"Very good," Makoto smiled, getting 'her' own hot chocolate ready and adding a marshmallow.

"Did you find any birds this afternoon?"

"I saw lots and lots of birds," Lana said happily as she sipped her hot chocolate. "They were very pretty."

"Did you have a favourite one?" Makoto asked idly, leaning back to look up at the stars.

"No," Lana said. "I decided I loved all of them the same."

She beamed up at Makoto.
