Little Dipper Campfire, After Dark

Anyone passing by would hear a great deal of swearing in Chinese, but probably wouldn't be able to see much in the dark.

Inara had (rather reluctantly) discovered that starting a campfire was much more complicated than it looked, particularly when one had never done it before.

Any help would probably be vastly appreciated.

"It's never happened here," she said, and shrugged. Might as well explain so she wouldn't worry. "I'm a fighter pilot on the side."

"Oooooh." Kaylee's eyes went very big. "What's your ship like?"

Jaina liked her just from that question. "It's called an X-wing. It's a small one-person craft, assisted by an astromech droid, with X-shaped S-foils. Hence the name. And there are other ships in my family', but that one's mine." She might have to get back into the flight shed soon. She did have a key...

"You ever work on her?" Kaylee asked, picturing the ship as best she could.

"A little, but nothing fancy. The military tends to frown on adding modifications to their fighters," she said with a slightly lopsided grin. "My dad's got a freighter I've done quite a bit of work on, though. You're into ships, huh?"

"Not flying," she confessed, "but I kinda like workin' on 'em. I used to help my daddy out with his ship repairs. Last engine I worked on was a propulsion, and I built a catalyzer last year."

"Impressive," Jaina said. "You know, I don't think I've met a lot of people here who actually like working on the ships. Which is sort of wrong considering how many people seem to like flying them."

Kaylee made a little face. "I can't fly at all. Way too much coordination/ But machines just kinda...talk to me. They're easy."

"You do stuff other than ships?" she wondered.

"Anything with moving parts, I'll try," she said, grinning. "My friend Ned has a clock he wants me to poke at."

"Is it just broken or does he want it modified somehow?" Look, it was rare she got to geek about stuff like this with someone she wasn't related to. It made her miss Lowie.

"It goes off at three in the mornin' every day," Kaylee told her, "so I got to fix that, and then I guess I can modify it too if he doesn't mind. Maybe I'll make it do something better. I ain't played with the tech on this planet yet."

"And I'm sure it'll seem kind of primative, being that far from the future," she pointed out. "Which should just be fun."

"At least it's all kinda familiar, in a old-timey kinda way," Kaylee said thoughtfully.

"Yeah," she agreed. "My grandfather- long story but it's weird- will talk about the technology he has in his time and I know it all differently. The ships I know are derived from ones around in his time and everything's so much more advanced. I kind of love it."

"I can kinda see our stuff lookin' at what they got around here," Kaylee agreed, nodding. "It ain't so different in the future, but it kinda makes me want to see if I can use the stuff here to build something like what we got at home."

"You should try," Jaina said immediately, ever helpful.

Kaylee grinned. "It'd be somethin' if I made a little ship out of a car or somethin'. Bet I'd pass my auto mechanics class."

"Maybe you can work in some extra credit, even," she added.

"Oooh." Kaylee was clearly enamored of this idea. "Do you work on anything 'sides ships?"

"Just about everything," Jaina admitted. "Droids, comlinks, appliances, anything mechanical I can usually work on or build or take apart. I think I've gotten spoiled always having someone better at computers than me, though."

"Droids are like robots, right?" Kaylee checked.

"Yeah, pretty much. I kind of think droids have more personality, though, but that might be bias," she said.
