Sirius Campfire, Thursday morning

The Sirius campfire was lit and burning merrily. Gladys was standing nearby, arms hanging, the glow in her eyes banked, as she waited for something that needed to be done.

Apart from setting up the fire, she hadn't moved since last night.

Noticing that Gladys was standing by the fire again, River approached slowly. At least she hadn't run into Adah today. Quietly she sat down next to the fire and watched the flames, smiling a little.

"They dance."

She moved, swivelling her head to look down at River, and her eyes flared into life. "Dance?"

"The flames," River clarified. "Good morning."

"Good Morning," she replied, staring at the fire. "That Is Dancing?"

"Yes." She smiled at Gladys. "Moving to their own music. What are you doing?"

"I Am Waiting," she replied, moving closer to the fire to try and hear the music.

"For what?" River found golem logic oddly intriguing.

"For Class. I Work And Then I Wait To Work. When The Sun Rose I Built The Fire And Then I Went Back To Waiting."

"What do you do when you wait?" River asked. "No hobby?"

"Morning Gladys," Jamie said coming out with a cup of coffee and a yawn. "Any luck last night?"

"Good Morning," she greeted him, eyes flaring. "There Was No Luck Last Night. The Stars Did Not Move, But I Will Keep Watching."

"Good for you," Jamie said settling down. "Did you see anything interesting at all?"

"I Saw Many Things. A Bird Perched On My Head And A Mouse Hid From It Between My Feet. It Eventually Flew Away. There Were Small Deer At The Edge Of The Camp. The Stars Flicker Even If They Do Not Move. Are Any Of Those Interesting?"

"It's not what I'm supposed to find interesting," Jamie said taking a sip. "It's what you're supposed to find interesting. Did you like those experiences?"

"I Believe They Were Interesting. It Is Hard To Know. I Do Not Know What I Am Supposed To Find Interesting."

"If you believe you found them interesting then that's what is important," Jamie said earnestly. "Having a bird land on you? Never happened to me. And I haven't seen a star flicker in a long time."

Gladys fell silent, eyes flickering. "Then Yes, It Was Interesting. You Could Watch The Stars With Me One Night And Then You Could See Them Flicker. I Can Not Promise There Will Be A Bird."

Ella roamed out of her cabin and over to the campfire, gnawing on a muffin. She blinked a little at the giant-statue-girl, but gave a tiny wave. "Hi?"

Gladys looked up. "Good Morning."

"Good morning," Ella answered with a (polite, and startled, but present) smile. "I'm Ella, I was just passing by and ... would you like some muffin?" he held up the breadstuff.

"Thank you, But Golems Do Not Eat. My Name is Gladys," she replied. "You Are Welcome To Eat Your Muffin Here."

"Thank you, Gladys," Ella said, perching on one of the stools about the campfire. "I've never met a Golem before. Where are you from?"

"I Came Here From Ankh-Morpork," she replied. "I Was A Secretary And Now I Am A Student. Where Do You Come From?"

"Frell," Ella answered promptly. She hadnt heard of Ankh-Morpork, but she took such things in stride. "It's a town in Kyrria. I was at finishing school, and now I am here."
