Sirius Campfire, Thursday morning

The Sirius campfire was lit and burning merrily. Gladys was standing nearby, arms hanging, the glow in her eyes banked, as she waited for something that needed to be done.

Apart from setting up the fire, she hadn't moved since last night.

"Sturdying stars can be considered a hobby," River told her. "Although I was thinking more along the lines of something practical. Like knitting." The golem seemed to be a practical sort of... person.

"Knitting?" She seemed to consider that. "A Valuable And Often Overlooked Traditional Skill That Is Practical. I Do Not Know How To Knit."

"I can teach you," River offered cheerfully. "Took a class once that included knitting dildo cozies."

"I Would Like To Learn How To Knit Dildo Cozies." It's worth noting here that Gladys had no idea what a dildo was. "I Do Not Know How To Sleep And It Would Be A Better Use Of My Time Than Waiting. Are Dildo Cozies Useful?"

"They are used to keep recreational toys at a comfortable temperature," River said, not sure of the golem definition of useful. "Can find knitting needles and yarn. Now?"

"There Is No Time Like The Present To Learn New Things."

"Back soon." River rose and hurried off, returning a while later with some knitting needles and yarns in various colours. She placed these in front of her.

"There Are Many Colours." She looked at her hands. "And The Needles Are Very Small." It wasn't defeat, though, and she carefully sat down, delicately picking up a roll of yarn between two fingers. It looked like a marble would in a person's hand. "If You Show Me I Will Copy You."

River quickly picked up the needles and began making enough stitches for a dildo cozy. She made them slowly, showing Gladys. "And then you continue in a circle. Like this."

Gladys was a golem, created to work and so created to learn. She managed to pinch the needles with the very tips of her fingers and copy River's actions. Slowly at first, and then the needles were flying. "When Should I Stop?"

"Depends on the size of the dildo," River said. "Should be about this long." She gestured with her hands. "Then you decrease the number of stitches and finish.

Her needles paused. "Show Me How To Finish, Please."

Slowly, River demonstrated this, impressed by the speed with which Gladys learnt this. "You have a natural talent."

"No I Do Not. I Am A Golem. A Golem Is Created To Work And So Must Know How To Carry Out A Task After Being Shown Only Once." She finished the dildo cozy with machine-like precision, and laid it on the ground in front of her. "That Is Not Talent. It Is What I Was Built For. I Would Like To Knit Another."

"You can have the yarn," River said. It wasn't like she'd be needing it. "Can probably buy more at Turtle and Canary."

"Thank You," she said, resting her hands on her knees. "What Colour Should I Use Next?"

It seemed to River that Gladys wasn't really the creative type. "Just close your eyes and pick up a ball at random," she suggested.

"My Eyes Do Not Close." She tilted her head back, though, to stare at the sky and placed her hand on a ball. "Purple," she said. "Is That A Good Colour?"

"All colours are good. Just a matter of context. You used the right method."

Her eyes flared with satisfaction at the praise. "I Have A Hobby."

River nodded, happy for Gladys, and pleased that she had been able to help.
