Little Dipper Campfire [evening]

Okay, so Kaylee was learning her way around the whole campfire thing, now that the rain had let up for a little bit. Tonight, she had equipped herself with marshmallows and sticks, as well as graham crackers and chocolate.

She was, perhaps, a little overly proud of herself for managing a real Earth thing without help from anyone.

Not that she'd really successfully made a s'more yet. She kept burning her marshmallows.

"Mmm-hmm!" she hummed brightly. "I'm Kaylee, hi! You likin' the class so far?"

"Cal," he offered back, scratching the back of his neck a little. "And it's okay; a bit too soon to tell, you know?"

She nodded. "I'm just grateful to have somethin' to tinker with, like. My hands were startin' to itch."

Cal grinned faintly. "You like working on stuff like that, then?"

She nodded eagerly. "Not cars, so much, since we don't got 'em at home. But engines, the like. You do too?"

Cal almost hated to admit it. "Only machine I'm good at tinkering with is my typewriter." Which, regretfully, had been collecting dust over in his dorm room. "Hoping to change that a little."

"What's a typewriter?" Kaylee asked, wide-eyed.

Cal's grin grew a little; the question was a lot cuter coming from Kaylee than it had been coming from Wes. "Exactly what it sounds like," he said. "It's something you use to write, by typing." His fingers danced a little in the air, miming the waltz against the keys. "Like a computer," he said, "but...vintage, I guess. Like me."

"Ooooh. How vintage?" she asked, eyeing him. "'Cause I'm...um, really really not vintage."

Cal took a moment to remember the exact dating. "32," he answered. "Which makes me 48. Not bad for my age, huh? How...not vintage are you?"

"I'm..." Kaylee thought for a moment, doing some quick math in her head. "489 years from being born. I'm very mature for a person who's not even born yet."

"Already tinkering with things and everything!" Cal pointed out with no small amount of awe, really. "That's incredible development."

There was a slight pause.

"489 years is a long ways up there..."

"I'm from 'nother galaxy, too," she added, nodding. "The future ain't so different, though, I promise."

"I'm not sure if that's good or bad," Cal admitted after a moment of consideration. "Although Jaina did mention glowy swords; I could be okay with glowy swords, but then there's that whole...various possible future things and this place is just...special like that."

"We don't got glowy swords where I'm from," she said thoughtfully. "But we got space travel. Obviously. And real pretty ships."

"Pretty?" Even if he tried, Cal wouldn't have been able to avoid being amused at that choice of adjective.

"Very shiny," she enthused. "Um. Or 'cool' is what y'all say nowadays, I s'pose."

Chuckling a little, Cal shook his head. "Like I'd know what was said nowadays. We did use cool, though. And groovy. Bouge for something gross. I like shiny."

Pause.

"As an adjective, I mean."

Last thing he needed was a statement like that to get back to Fan Butt somehow.
