Little Dipper Campfire [evening]

Okay, so Kaylee was learning her way around the whole campfire thing, now that the rain had let up for a little bit. Tonight, she had equipped herself with marshmallows and sticks, as well as graham crackers and chocolate.

She was, perhaps, a little overly proud of herself for managing a real Earth thing without help from anyone.

Not that she'd really successfully made a s'more yet. She kept burning her marshmallows.

"I haven't really asked it," Ned said, visions of sentient beds now running through his head. "Should I?"

"If it starts talking back, will you talk to my bed for me?" Ned asked. What was sad was that he was perfectly serious.

"Share your...bed?" Ned stammered just a bit. "Won't that be crowded?"

"But there'd be...a crowd," he said, trying to keep his flailing both to a minimum and internal. "And it's your bed."

"But, then where would we sleep?" He realized what he'd said immediately. "We as in you and me. Together. Not that kind of together. Separately but together. Together because we'd both have mean beds. Not together as in sharing a bed. Unless there was only one bed left on the island."

Pause.

"And I'd take the floor in that case. I'd give you the bed. You'd deserve it more."

"But." He frowned. "But, I'd want you to take the bed. I'd want you to be more comfortable."

"Would you take the bed if I asked nicely?" Ned wondered.

"No, because I'd insist on you taking the bed," he said. "I'd want you to take the bed."

Ned sighed, trying to figure out a way he could make her take the bed. Yes, it didn't matter that this bed was completely theoretical.

"Why would you want me to take the bed?"

[identity profile] death-and-pies.livejournal.com 2008-05-25 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
"I'd be comfortable on the floor," he told her.

"You shouldn't worry about that," he said. "Not important."

"Oh." He knew she was right. Hard to argue when someone was right. "It's just."

Just what?

"It's just I'd be more comfortable and feel more secure if you took the theoretical bed," Ned said. "And I believe it would benefit us both. You're better with your hands. Proven. Should we be stuck with the last bed on the island, you being more comfortable would be more conducive to you building and repairing beds that were destroyed. I don't do much in terms of usefulness but my good deed would be allowing you that last bed so you could help care for us all. A good night's sleep has been proven to produce more alert and energetic people. If I took the bed, slept and woke up, I'd still be unable to do anything more useful than bake something or stand around and stare."

He paused, took a breath.

"I don't want much," he said quietly, "but I'd want you to take the bed."
