Second floor common room, late Sunday night

The genet dashed into the common room, Gladys following, and leapt onto the couch, the TV, then bounced back. "You Have Too Much Energy," she told it, holding out a hand. It leapt into it and started sharpening its claws and trilling.

That meant it was hungry (Gladys had not let it eat any of the tiny monkeys) so she started opening cupboards, looking for something to feed it. The genet immediately ran inside and started kicking things out. "That Is Not Helpful."

It ignored her, pounced on a cereal box, dragged it to the middle of the room, and started disembowelling it. "Your Manners Need Some Work."

Jaina was bored and therefore wandering looking for entertainment, and when she got to the second floor, she decided her search for entertainment was over. "New friend?" she asked.

Alice hovered in the doorway, looking at the genet, then the golem, and the genet again.

"I've a feeling you're being dreadfully disobedient," she told the genet, smiling.

She could recognize her own kind, after all.

The genet lifted its head and hissed at her, clutching the cereal protectively to its body. Gladys sighed and tapped it on the head. "Hissing Is Rude," she informed it. "Hello, Jaina. It Is A Genet. I Think It Is A Pet, But It Has No Manners."

It looked up, cereal stuck in its whiskers and trilled at her. "It Has No Manners," Gladys told her. "I Am Gladys."

"Pets usually don't, without some training," she said, watching the animal from a safe distance. "Is it yours?"

Jamie carefully entered the common room looking for any particular people who might want his head.

And then saw Gladys and her pet. "Hey, Gladys. Pick out a name yet?"

"Alice Liddell, pleased to make your acquaintance," she said. The curtsy was too ingrained to have been lost in her month at Fandom. "I should be surprised if it did have manners. Most animals don't, although the cats I've known certainly believe themselves to be well-mannered. Or perhaps they consider themselves too regal for etiquette to matter."

"Yes. It Has Adopted Me." Her eyes flickered, as if she wasn't sure how she felt about it. "I Do Not Know How To Train It. It Is Friendly When It Is Not Eating."

The genet grumbled and chirruped, wolfing down more cereal.

Recognizing the girl from the raving royals class, Jaina gave her a little wave. "Alice, right?"

"Hey Alice," Jamie said taking a seat away from the genet. "What's the good word?"

"Hello, Jamie." The genet was now sugar-fuelled and it bounced around Jamie, chirruping and trilling. "It Does Not Have A Name Yet. I Do Not Know What To Call It."

"It Is A Genet." Gladys looked down at it, and it blinked up at her, looking innocent as it crunched up another piece. "I Am A Golem So It Is Not Necessary To Curtsy To Me."

"Yes, quite," Alice said, dropping the other girl a curtsy. "I'm afraid I know your face, but not your name. My apologies, that's terribly rude. We're in class together, I believe?"

Jamie watched the pet bounce around in amusement... while also making sure it would attack him. "Frisky little thing, isn't it?" Jamie chuckled. "Well as for the name, is it a boy or a girl?"

"Hello, Jamie," she smiled, bobbing her head in an abbreviated nod. "Is there a particular good word? I'm fond of ones that are difficult to pronounce."

"I'm not familiar with the creature," Alice said. "Do genets make good pets? I do apologize if the curtsying was somehow offensive. I was taught that a lady curtsies any time she is introduced to another individual, and though I'm rather a spectacular failure at being a proper lady, that habit has stayed with me."

Gladys' eyes dimmed. "I Do Not Know." The genet crouched, butt wiggling, and Gladys scooped it up before it could attack Jamie's foot.

"It Was Not Offensive," she replied. "And I Begin To Believe They Do Not Make Good Pets." She paused. "I Am A Lady. Should I Curtsy When I Am Introduced?"

"I wish I could help you there, Gladys. My only advice is to not try training him when he's eating then," she said. She left that sort of thing to Jacen as much as possible for a reason.

"Yeah," she said. "It's Jaina. And don't worry about it. Introductions in class a few weeks ago doesn't generally stick in the brains of the listening audience. You're newish here, right?"

"That depends entirely on your upbringing and the society you were raised in," Alice said, lacing her fingers together behind her back. "It seems it's not Done as much in this particular timeframe. I'm from the past, you see. The future isn't quite what I had imagined."

She had sort of imagined aliens with silver spaceships, and great cities in the sky. Although there were aliens, at least, and presumably those aliens owned spaceships, so really, the future wasn't doing half so badly as she would have thought.

"Well... you got it there," Jamie said. "Flip it over and see what it has to share."

"I Will Find A Book That Tells Me How To Do It," she decided. The genet rolled onto its back and tossed a piece of cereal in the air, then leapt to its feet and trotted over to peer at Jaina from behind Gladys' foot. "Will You Need Help With Your Training Again?"

"Jaina, then," Alice said, bobbing her head. "I shall remember this time. I was glancing around the room trying to pair twenty-odd names to twenty-odd faces and I don't believe I succeeded at all."

She flushed. "I have been enrolled here a month, less a few days. I have to confess, I've largely no idea what anyone's talking about. It's a lovely island, though. Are you from ... here?"

This world, this time period, this general era? Alice wasn't sure which she meant, either.

She thought about that, eyes dimming, then they flared. "Would You Teach Me How To Curtsy?" she asked. "In Case I Am In A Place Where A Lady Should."
