Fourth Floor Common Room, Friday evening [7/11]

Hoshi had a spread of Japanese dishes in the common room, including beef teriyaki, various types of sushi and lots of little pink rice cakes. There was also a delicious-looking cake. What Hoshi didn't bother with were any sort of decorations. It would be hard to tell that this was all for her birthday.

[Open to all! Minor OCD coming is up.]

"I don't know what it is," Jen said, waving her in, "but it's good."

Momoko bounced in, thankful for the welcome. "Hi! My name's Momoko Akatsutsumi, I'm a new sophomore here and I'm on the wrong floor but no one has said anything about me wandering and I thought I smelled someone cooking good food so here I am."

She picked up one of the pink treats and tasted it. "Mmmm. Did this come from a store in town?" She looked around for a small plate to hold a few more.

"No, I think --" It took a moment or two for her to process all the words; she hadn't been in contact with Trip at all the past seven months and her Hyper-to-Normal translation skills were getting rusty. Jen looked around for Hoshi, and half-pointed in her direction. "She made it. People around here tend to make food a lot, and trust me, nobody minds if you wander into someone else's common room."

"Wow. I envy people who can cook!" Momoko bounced a moment as she finished another bite. "So, I guess since you said that about the common rooms that you aren't new here too? How long have you been going to this school, or are you from here? Is it possible to be from here? I had to get here through a portal."

"I've been here about six months," Jen said. Wow, how did anyone sustain that level of energy? She'd never gotten around to asking Trip. It was really impressive, she had to say. "I came here through a time vortex; I'm from the year 3000 . . . and I envy people who can cook, too."

"Wow! That's pretty far away all right! I haven't been to the future. I traveled back to the past once. It was pretty cool and we visited a couple of places and met some interesting people, then we ended up almost stranded in a different dimension because something went wrong with the wiring." Momoko grimaced at the memory of WHY she and her teammates had gone back in time, then took another bite of energy rice cake.

"I haven't been to the future either," Jen said helpfully, because there was a whole find-common-ground rule to this social interaction thing that she was finally learning to grasp. "Just this time, and 2001. We're not really supposed to travel through time unless it's unavoidable."

Or, you know, if you were on the run from your own employer but she wasn't bringing that up. She did, however, reach for a rice cake, wondering if maybe it had some secret energy reserve that she hadn't figured out how to channel yet.

"Yeah. But you're from the future. Well, not my future, but a future. Although I guess if it's not my future and it's not your future, then it's not really the future after all." Momoko nodded. "Does that mean that you can't go back home, to the future? Or I mean, to your present? Would that mess up the time continuum like it does in that movie, uh... 'Return to the Future', I think it was."

"I already messed it up," Jen admitted, sheepishly. Luckily, she was used to this sort of reasoning from being friends with Bridge, and it wasn't hard at all to puzzle through. (Of all the classes she wished they'd taught at the Academy, that would be one.) "The timeline in my world's been altered, and yeah, that pretty much means I can't go home any more."

It was a grossly simplified explanation, granted.

Wow. That really can happen?

"Wow. It really happened? That so horrible for you, I'm sorry. I didn't know!" And Momoko was now VERY glad that she, Bubbles, and Buttercup hadn't messed up their own timeline.

"But at least you're here and not erased from time and space or anything! And you don't seem to be an evil anti-matter universe version of you, except that I haven't met you before today, so maybe you are, but if so, I really like this you better than the other you. Who I haven't met but if she's your opposite, I already don't like her! Really!"
