Fourth Floor Common Room, Friday evening [7/11]

Hoshi had a spread of Japanese dishes in the common room, including beef teriyaki, various types of sushi and lots of little pink rice cakes. There was also a delicious-looking cake. What Hoshi didn't bother with were any sort of decorations. It would be hard to tell that this was all for her birthday.

Passing by the common room on his way toward perhaps an inkling toward being somewhat social, Cal couldn't help but notice the sheer amount of food laid out in the common room.

To the point where he ducked in long enough to observe, "That is a lot of food."

"I don't like to send anyone away hungry," said Hoshi with a smirk.

"Is there an occasion?" Cal asked, scoping out the sushi. "Or were just just...in a mood to cook?"

"My birthday was earlier in the week, and I didn't get a chance to really celebrate it on Wednesday," explained Hoshi.

"...Awww! Happy birthday!" Cal gave her a bright, congratulatory smile at that. "How old are you now, then? And shouldn't someone cook for you on your birthday, not the other way around?"

"Whoa," said Jen, wandering in after work which will get posted in a sec, rly. "That's a lot of food."

"...That's what I said," Cal, at this point figuring it wouldn't hurt to enjoy a little bit of it before he headed out, agreed.

"I love the little rice cakes," Jen added. "They're pink!" Which was, of course, the main selling point.

Cal snorted a little at that. "Because, yes," he said, "as long as something is pink, it must be good."

He figured that was a safer direction to take it than just commenting that, of course she thought that. She was a girl.

A girl who, in most other ways, didn't exactly come across as the type to be overly fond of pink, but there you had it.

"Not necessarily," she replied. "My evil alternate mirror-universe self, for one . . ."

"I was actually worried that there wouldn't be enough," said Hoshi, looking a bit sheepish.

"Well, it looks gorgeous," Jen told her. "You seriously did all this yourself?"

She scrunched up one side of her face just a bit, suddenly feeling juuuuuuuuuust a tad inadequate.

Hoshi shrugged. "I like to cook, so it really wasn't that difficult," she explained. "I did get the cake started while I was at work yesterday, though, so that might have been cheating a bit."

Momoko had smelled "home-cooking". She paused in the doorway and saw the room was set up with a large amount of food that seemed awfully like the food she would often see back home. She wandered in.

"Is that... sakuramochi?"

"I don't know what it is," Jen said, waving her in, "but it's good."

Momoko bounced in, thankful for the welcome. "Hi! My name's Momoko Akatsutsumi, I'm a new sophomore here and I'm on the wrong floor but no one has said anything about me wandering and I thought I smelled someone cooking good food so here I am."

She picked up one of the pink treats and tasted it. "Mmmm. Did this come from a store in town?" She looked around for a small plate to hold a few more.

"No, I think --" It took a moment or two for her to process all the words; she hadn't been in contact with Trip at all the past seven months and her Hyper-to-Normal translation skills were getting rusty. Jen looked around for Hoshi, and half-pointed in her direction. "She made it. People around here tend to make food a lot, and trust me, nobody minds if you wander into someone else's common room."

"It is!" said Hoshi, smiling at the girl she hadn't met yet. "It seemed kind of appropriate for the occasion."

"Ahhhh Sakuramochi! Just like back home." She tasted again and, after swallowing, smiled at the other teen. "My name's Momoko Akatsutsumi! Hello! I'm new here to the school and I wandered in to this room even though it's not my floor because I thought I smelled good food. Not that the other food I've had here hasn't been good, but it isn't like home." She tilted her head, curious. "Occasion?"

"You should come up here often. I love to cook food from home. Hoshi Sato, junior from Kyoto," she said. "My birthday was on Wednesday, so this is kind of a late birthday party."

I really wanted to acknowledge Hoshi's birthday even though it's been an absolutely crazy week for me. Some definite SP this evening, but I'm around all afternoon.
