Fourth Floor Common Room, Friday evening [7/11]

Hoshi had a spread of Japanese dishes in the common room, including beef teriyaki, various types of sushi and lots of little pink rice cakes. There was also a delicious-looking cake. What Hoshi didn't bother with were any sort of decorations. It would be hard to tell that this was all for her birthday.

"Cheating?" Jen waved a hand and made a dismissive noise. "I can't even make cookies right. This is incredible."

"Cooking is actually a little bit like chemistry. When the right ingredients come together, it all works," said Hoshi. "If you ever want help, I could show you. Cookies are the easiest thing to start out with."

Jen shook her head ruefully. "I'm a cop, not a scientist. I never had the patience for that kind of thing," she said, a faint chuckle escaping her as she remembered the look on Wes's face -- her Wes, from 2001 -- the first time he'd sampled her cookies. He'd tried so hard to be nonchalant until he couldn't keep himself from spitting the mouthful out any more. "The kitchen guys at work keep chasing me out of the back."

Hoshi snickered. "Really? River and I held a strike at the hotel to let Gunther let us cook. We locked him in a closet and wouldn't let him out to make a point."

"Whereas I," Jen said with a rueful wrinkle of her nose, "had the kitchen guys threaten to go on strike if I ever tried to cook anything again. Pizza's not as easy as it looks, apparently, or I just have a talent for screwing it up."

"Did you try making pizza from scratch, or did you just start out picking out toppings?" asked Hoshi, curious.

Jen's shoulders slumped slightly. "Picking out toppings. I don't know how the hot sauce got switched with the tomato sauce, I swear."

Hoshi's eyes widened. "Oh, wow. That must have been some pizza."

Hey, it had been a while ago; Jen could kind of see the humor in it now, and she chuckled briefly. "Useful as a weapon, maybe. Guess I was sort of trying to stick to what I knew?"

"Food as a weapon," said Hoshi. "I never considered that possibility, but it might be helpful to remember the next time we get invaded."

Now Jen felt like she was more in her element, and her voice lost some of the tentative tone that had just felt wrong. "Oh, pretty much anything can be a weapon if you figure out how to improvise. I mean, you never know, right? But that pizza was . . . yeah."

"During Fandom Invasions last spring, we had one class where we got attacked by jello dragons in the Danger Room," said Hoshi. "I managed to get rid of mine by shrieking at a really high-pitched tone. Never would have thought of using that as a weapon."

Jen grinned. "Before I got here? I always thought 'anything can be a weapon' was an exaggeration just to get people thinking about improvising. Now I think it's a lot more literal than I ever realized."

Hoshi smiled, thinking back to how she used to keep a stapler around as a potential weapon in case her room got invaded. "There was a class I took on preparedness that used to make us look for stuff like that," she said.

"Yeah, I had some classes back at the Academy like that," Jen agreed. "They'd stick us in a simulator with ten random objects and we'd have to figure out how we could use them in different situations. Here it's more . . . hands-on."
