4th Floor Common Room: Sunday evening [8-24-08]

Lana was trying very hard not to think about this being her last weekend in Fandom. So, once she'd moved her things back to her room, she'd headed out to the common room and settled herself down to watch the last of the Olympics. There was popcorn and fruit at present and she was seriously considering making some spaghetti later.

"They're not so bad," Lana said slowly. "But it's not like I have much else."

"I love my brother but he was born wearing a suit," Peter explained. "I'm a slacker in comparison."

She laughed. "I can totally see him as a toddler running around in a suit."

"I'm told the trick was getting him out of one," Peter replied.

Her mind went to a nice, but very bad place for a moment.

Peter's, of course, did not. No matter what canon might seem to encourage

"Well, I'm on my own," Lana said. "Handful of good friends, but no family or home to go back to. And my friends are trying to make their own way, so... a plan is important for me to have any chance of getting what I want.

"I give you a lot of credit for that," Peter said, and meant it.

"Thanks," Lana said. "But I'm lucky, really. I found something I really liked and managed to get enough scholarships to be able to manage it. Now I just have to work my butt off to keep it."

"Pretty sure hard work isn't luck," Peter said. "Luck is when things are just handed to you."

"The finding it was luck. The rest was hard work," Lana admitted. "But I'm not sure I would have been so driven if I'd had other options, you know?"

"That I do know," Peter said. "That's one of the nice things about Fandom, most people here are appreciative of what they have."

"Yeah, most people have been through a lot," Lana agreed. "It makes it easier to talk to them - common experiences."

"Or learning experiences," Peter said. "I couldn've have learned nearly as much about dealing with my power back home."

"Yeah," Lana said, "Well, not that I have any powers, but... I get it."

"Exactly," Peter said. "I can talk about that with you and you don't think I need to be locked up."

She laughed. "Nope. Though just because I don't have powers of my own doesn't mean I didn't experience things back home that wouldn't have landed me in the rubber room next to yours if I'd talked about them."

"Well at least I would've had a nice neighbor," Peter said.

She laughed. "Yes, we could have developed a secret system of knocks to communicate."

"Which we could use to drive everyone else nuts," Peter teased.

"Absolutely. See, now you can tell your brother I talked to you and we developed a plan for your future!"

Peter chuckled. "Works for me."

"There we go," she said. "All sorts of things being solved tonight."
