Fourth floor common room, Monday morning

Dean didn't have any classes today and figured he could start off the term by making breakfast for whoever happened by. And if no one happened by, then there'd just be a lot of food for him to eat.

Really, there wasn't any bad here.

"Now that is a loaded question," Dean said, waggling his eyebrows at her. "You can butter some toast?"

Inara laughed, "I can probably manage that."

"You can probably manage a hell of a lot."

Her eyebrows rose. "I probably can. And you? Are you used to working on your own, or in groups?"

"I'm... flexible," Dean said. "But groups can be a lotta fun."

"That is what I've heard, though I have to admit to being without practical experience in that regard."

"Well you've gotta have the right people, but when you do, I highly reccomend the experience."

"I'll keep that in mind," she said, smoothing butter onto the toast. "I'd think that would take a great deal of coordination, on everyone's part. Too many cooks, and all of that."

"Nothing wrong with a little on the spot negotiation," Dean said.

Inara imagined, briefly, the look on Gavin's face were she to suggest it, and burst out laughing. "If you can think to negotiate, I believe you may be doing it wrong."

"Haven't had any complaints yet."

She took a bite of toast. "Maybe people are just too shy to say anything."

Dean snorted. "Believe me, the people involved? Not really the shy retiring type."

"Is that the kind of people you prefer as cooking partners? The outgoing, outspoken type?" She went to the sink to rinse the knife. "It sounds almost like a battleground."

"Can be sometimes," Dean said, thinking of a few occasions with a fond smile.

Inara smiled back, understanding his look completely. "It occurs to me that I don't know your name."

"Dean Winchester," Dean said. "And you are? Other than beautiful?"

She tried not to eyeroll. "Inara Serra. Are you a new student?"

"I've been here for two years."

"Well. This is certainly embarrassing," she said, "as I've been here for one."

Dean cocked his head to the side. "I've heard your name -- my brother and I do radio -- but I guess we've just never crossed paths before."

"I don't listen to the radio much," she admitted, head down slightly, "I'm afraid I don't always find the reporting completely...accurate."

"That's what happens when your reporters are a bunch of drunken squirrels," Dean said with a shrug. "Still, you can usually get the gist. Just need to read between the lines."

"I spend too much time reading between the lines already," she told him, stacking the toast onto plates.

"Well, if it helps, I always thought you've come off as a totally classy lady on the radio."
