Fourth floor common room, Monday morning

Dean didn't have any classes today and figured he could start off the term by making breakfast for whoever happened by. And if no one happened by, then there'd just be a lot of food for him to eat.

Really, there wasn't any bad here.

Sam gave Dean a mock glare as he went back to his food. "Did you talk to Dawn like you said you would?" he asked.

"Yep," Dean said shortly.

"That was good of you," Sam said simply.

"She's a good friend," Dean said.

"She's a good person," Sam added. "Does she hate me? Not that I blame her, I'm just wondering."

"She told me to look after you," Dean told him.

"Really?" Sam asked, unable to keep from sounding surprised.

"People just don't turn their feelings off Sammy, even if someone is acting like an idiot," Dean told him.

Sam looked down and sighed. "Idiot or not, I still think she's safer without me."

"Sometimes safe ain't all it's cracked up to be," Dean said.

"Yeah, it's not like we've spent our whole lives trying to make people safe or anything," Sam said sarcastically. "It's not that important."

"And we do it by putting ourselves in danger's path by choice," Dean said.

"Well, yeah. That's what hunters do," Sam said, shrugging.

"Pretty much what Watchers do too," Dean pointed out. "And those close to same."

"Yeah, okay. Which means that Dawn is strong, and capable of taking care of herself," Sam said.

"And making her own choices about what she's willing to risk," Dean said leadingly.

"You mean the risk of being with me," Sam replied.

"Just for example," Dean said.

"Well, she can be willing to take the risk all she wants. I'm not letting her take it," Sam replied.

Dean headdesked on the counter. "Dude, did you actually listen to anything I've just said?"

"Yes, but...I don't know what you want me to say," Sam said, sighing.

"Look at it this way," Dean said. "If Dawn had some sorta potential of like having the monks who created her go after anyone close to her and you knew all about that and decided she was worth the potential risk, and then she decided to break up with you for your own good anyway...."

"I'd be hurt," Sam said. "And I'd probably be really mad at her, and I'd insist that I knew better than she did. But in the end, I hope I'd realize that I'm thousands of miles away from her and that if there was trouble, she wouldn't be able to help me - even if she had a teleporting cat," he added quickly. "And the possibility that nothing would happen to me and she wouldn't have to worry as much about me would be worth not getting to have her until maybe we can be together again."

"Things won't be the same when I graduate," Sam explained. "I could protect her then, if she still wants me to."
