Second Floor Common Room [evening]

While Evey absolutely preferred her own room, and her own television, she recognized the limitations thereof.

...mainly, that when her cat managed to tangle herself in the wires and unplug everything, it was going to take rather more effort than she would have preferred to put forth tonight to fix it.

Which was why Evey, with Vashti curled up in her lap and an assortment of sweets before her, was perched on a couch in the common room and raptly watching the tail end of the third Space Battles prequel.

And, naturally -- as she always did -- wondering why the hell the supposed heroine was so stupid.

The sounds reminded him of the movie they'd watched from the pool, and that was enough to draw Ender out into the common room. It was occupied, of course-- communal rooms usually were.

He took a spot on the couch. "Space Battles?" he asked. The name still sounded silly.

"I'm choosing to give my brain the night off," she said with a small smile. "Everyone deserves one now and then, don't you think?"

"I'm not sure if 'deserve' is the right word," he said, giving her a quick nod, "But if you have the chance, it can't hurt."

"Exactly," she said, nodding. "It's like anything else. I've spent the day thinking and working. A little brain-candy isn't going to hurt." She tilted her head, trying to decide if she recognized the boy or not. "We have Leadership together, don't we?"

Ender decided that, if anything, was a sign to make himself comfortable. With the inane amounts of time that were now at his disposal, he, too, didn't really see the point in not taking this kind of time if he could. "We do," he answered, because though he didn't directly recognize the girl, he was pretty certain about his class schedule. "I wonder what Petrelli would think of Space Battles."

It was as good an opening as any.

She actually laughed. "Well, let's see. He's an American from...roughly around this time, I would guess? I imagine he grew up watching this. It's ancient cinema where I'm from, but even so it's somewhat classic."

"The original three," she added quickly. "Not this crap."

That was interesting-- and he could sympathise. "It's ancient cinema for me, too," Ender confided, "Although I'd never seen it before."

"What year are you from?" she asked curiously, raising her brow.

"2135," he said. It wasn't exactly classified information. "You?"

She stared. "Um. 2028. You win. It's rare I meet someone who's from further in the future than me."

"It doesn't really feel like the future to me," Ender said, with a little shrug. "How's 2028?"

"Better than 2027," she said simply. "How's 2135?"

"Better than 2134," Ender echoed, "Or worse, depending on where you stand."

She arched a brow, but didn't press. "Have you lot got flying cars yet?"

"Flying cars?" Ender asked. He remembered the idea from books and stories, but... "I don't think gravity would like that."

"Aww, not even with hovercraft...technology?" she asked, smiling. "I'm sorry, it's not my area of expertise. Everyone just always seems to expect the future to have flying cars."

"There's always hovercraft," Ender amended, and thought about it. "But they're not very efficient. Most technological advances are done during times of war, for war-- and flying cars are difficult."

Alice lingered in the doorway, glancing at the screen.

"I don't believe I've seen this movie," she said. "Will it be impossible to follow, were I to join you?"

"But then those advances are adapted," she pointed out, "for everyday life. So maybe flying cars are on the way."

Alice gave the boy a curious glance.

"You were in the library," she said. "When we had to fetch that book, to make the other island go away."

Alice did poorly with things such as 'hello.'

"It's mind-bogglingly simplistic," she said, smiling lightly and waving the other girl in. "I promise, you should be able to follow."

"Maybe." He shot her a look. "But I bet they said that in your time, too."

Apparently, it was the day for it. "Yes, I was," Ender replied, without blinking at the suddenness of it. It was almost familiar, actually. "And so were you."

"...I did get a few questions when I arrived here, but I'm also only twenty years in the future," she replied.

"If it helps," he said, "We've got spaceflight."
