Second Floor Common Room [evening]

While Evey absolutely preferred her own room, and her own television, she recognized the limitations thereof.

...mainly, that when her cat managed to tangle herself in the wires and unplug everything, it was going to take rather more effort than she would have preferred to put forth tonight to fix it.

Which was why Evey, with Vashti curled up in her lap and an assortment of sweets before her, was perched on a couch in the common room and raptly watching the tail end of the third Space Battles prequel.

And, naturally -- as she always did -- wondering why the hell the supposed heroine was so stupid.

[open as common rooms areeeeeee. distract me from my paper, pls.]

The sounds reminded him of the movie they'd watched from the pool, and that was enough to draw Ender out into the common room. It was occupied, of course-- communal rooms usually were.

He took a spot on the couch. "Space Battles?" he asked. The name still sounded silly.

"I'm not sure if 'deserve' is the right word," he said, giving her a quick nod, "But if you have the chance, it can't hurt."

Ender decided that, if anything, was a sign to make himself comfortable. With the inane amounts of time that were now at his disposal, he, too, didn't really see the point in not taking this kind of time if he could. "We do," he answered, because though he didn't directly recognize the girl, he was pretty certain about his class schedule. "I wonder what Petrelli would think of Space Battles."

It was as good an opening as any.

That was interesting-- and he could sympathise. "It's ancient cinema for me, too," Ender confided, "Although I'd never seen it before."

"2135," he said. It wasn't exactly classified information. "You?"

Alice gave the boy a curious glance.

"You were in the library," she said. "When we had to fetch that book, to make the other island go away."

Alice did poorly with things such as 'hello.'
endsthegame: (oh really?)

[personal profile] endsthegame 2008-10-08 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently, it was the day for it. "Yes, I was," Ender replied, without blinking at the suddenness of it. It was almost familiar, actually. "And so were you."

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
"I was the one arguing we shouldn't coddle the books," she shrugged. "It seemed an unpopular suggestion at the time. I'm Alice."
endsthegame: (ender is in charge)

[personal profile] endsthegame 2008-10-08 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
Ender nodded at her. It was a little like a belated greeting. "I'm Ender," he offered, "And I think that might have been because the books were attacking us at the time."

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
"All the more reason for us to take the initiative," Alice said. "One strong display of force, and perhaps they would have backed down."

It was hard not to think in battle terms, at times.
endsthegame: (is looking up)

[personal profile] endsthegame 2008-10-08 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
"They probably would have," Ender agreed. It had always been easy for him to think that way. But if there was one thing he'd learned... "But we might not have liked the end result. I'd rather not kill any books."

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Perhaps you're right," she agreed easily. "I suppose it would depend on the book, for myself. One filled with figures and maths, I could happily light on fire."

Alice had a terrible head for maths.

[personal profile] endsthegame 2008-10-08 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
"It's a threat to keep in mind for the next time." He couldn't get too upset about the destruction of books: unless they had actually been sentient. "We'd have to ask its intentions."

Alice lingered in the doorway, glancing at the screen.

"I don't believe I've seen this movie," she said. "Will it be impossible to follow, were I to join you?"

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
Alice smiled and entered, nodding to the girl and finding a seat for herself. "I suppose a far better question might have been, would you object to explaining it to me, or do you care if I join you? I always get those things out of order. Too curious for my own good. If you do mind, I shan't take it badly. This isn't even my common room."

She had no concept of the etiquette of such things, but she was bored and curious and roaming the halls, and had noticed others.

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
"They have knights, in space?" Alice frowned. "I supposed such things were from the past, and not the future. Is he an alien? It's good that he spares pregnant women, I suppose, though that hardly absolves his other crimes."

She settled in, watching the screen and its very painful dialogue.

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2008-10-08 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh," Alice said, nodding emphatically at that last point. "In that case, I shall worry about it less. Much like technology: I've decided it's all magic, even though I know that it isn't, and it worries my head less. So he's killing all who aren't his expecting wife. Family first, naturally."
