The fact that it took Cal so much effort to drag himself out of bed and force himself to the gym only made it clear that he needed to be much, much better at this whole thing. He was still rubbing his eyes a little as he stretched, but as soon as he settled into a weight machine, he was fairly immersed in the routine and the effort to just get good and sweaty.

The jeer didn't have as much snark in it as it usually might have, if only because Cal didn't have the foresight to realize that mentioning John at all would make him shudder in revulsion for reasons he couldn't quite explain.
