Cheerleading Practice -- Wednesday After Classes, In The Gym

Savannah was cheerfully bouncing around as she set everything up for practice.

The mats were pulled out and there was a table of healthy snacks and caffeine -- along with bottled water.

Once everything was set up to her liking, she started stretching out.

Joan sat down near Kaylee and started stretching.

"Hey, Kaylee, right?"

She was trying to make an effort to get to know more of her fellow cheerleaders.

Kaylee nodded eagerly, smiling over at the other girl and waving. "That's me! An' you're...Joan, right?"

"Yup! I feel like I haven't talked to enough people on the squad, so I'm trying to be more outgoing."

And she was even doing it on her own, not as a mandate from God.

"I know the feelin'," Kaylee agreed, nodding. "I mean, I joined 'cause I like jumpin' 'round an' cheerin' an' all that, but I ain't talked to soooo many people on the team. So hi!"

Joan grinned. "Hi! So where are you from?"

"Beylix. S'in another galaxy. An' um, I'm from almost five hundred years from now," she added. "Have I freaked you out yet?"

"Nah, a few months ago you would have, but my roommate grew up in the forest so nothing really phases me anymore," Joan said.

"Oh, good," Kaylee sighed. "I been here since summer but I still get those looks when I mention that. Where're you from?"

"Maryland," Joan admitted with a sheepish smile. "Not very glamorous or exciting."

"Oh, so you're from real close!" Kaylee said excitedly. "Lucky you, bein' so near home."

"It's got good points and bad points," she said. "My family kind of hovers a little."

"Oh?" Kaylee asked, tilting her head. "I wish my parents was closer, but I guess there's two sides t'everything, huh?"

"Yeah, I guess there is," Joan agreed.

"Are you from this year an' all, too?" she asked curiously.

"Yup, totally boring and normal," Joan said. "No superpowers, no time travel, no anything exciting."

Except that whole talking to God thing, but she wasn't mentioning that.

"All I got is the time an' space thing," Kaylee admitted. "No powers or nothin', 'less you count bein' able to fix stuff. An' I don't, 'cause that ain't a power so much as just fun."

"What kind of stuff can you fix?" she asked.

"Pretty much this side of anything with a engine or a motor, an' even if it don't got either of those but it's mechanical, I can take a look at it," Kaylee said, shrugging. "My daddy's got a shop at home an' I been workin' in it since I was old 'nough that I wouldn't hurt myself."

"Oh, cool. I'm so horrible at anything like that," Joan said. "I tried to build a boat once. It didn't go so well."

"What went wrong?" Kaylee asked curiously.

Joan shrugged. "There's no way it would have floated."
