3rd Floor Common Room: Monday Night [1-19-09]

Peyton stretched out on the couch with more take-out Chinese than she'd ever manage to eat on her own. She couldn't help wondering if there'd be any fall-out - good or bad - from the crazy phone calls she'd placed and misplaced yesterday.

There was enough mindless television on to keep her distracted for a few hours.

[ooc: Open!]

"The..." she frowned, trying to recall the word. "Chopsticks. I am not knowing how to use those," she waved her own fork.

"Ohhh." Dinah swallowed, and sat up, holding up her fingers and tapping them together. "It takes practice. I kind of think of it as having two pencils in my fingers. We used to order a lot of late-night take-out Chinese back home, so I got pretty good at it." She picked up another bite of chicken a little more slowly, then popped it in her mouth. "Just fun."

Firekeeper watched closely again, then set aside her fork to pick up a pair of chopsticks from the table. Clumsily, she attempted to maneuver a piece of chicken to her mouth... and totally, utterly failed.

Much to Blind Seer's delight as he snapped up the dropped morsel.

"I think I will be needing much practice," she commented dryly.

Dinah laughed, but only a little bit. "It's not mandatory." She grinned at Blind Seer. "And at least you benefit from it, hunh?" She looked back at Blysse. "What kind of food do you guys eat back home?"

"When we is in the forest?" Firekeeper shrugged. "We eat what we catch. Elk, deer, rabbit, fish. With humans? Many of these same things, prepared in strange ways."

"Hunh." Dinah ate some more rice, thinking. "A lot more work than here, hunh. You've had ice cream and cookies and stuff since you've gotten here though, right?"

[identity profile] kestrelswolf.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Have had cookies," Firekeeper nodded. "And ice cream, once."

Dinah tilted her head at Blind Seer, then asked, "So, do you get homework too? Since you're in classes with Blysse?" Back to Blysse, she added, "Sorry to use you as a translator, but I guess it's unavoidable."

"Is okay," Firekeeper smiled at her. "Though many is taking me serious when I say he is no pet, not many choose to speak with him. I not mind sharing his words with you. And, he not have homework? But sometimes, when classes is involving physical things, he is participating too."

"Cooool." Dinah thought about that, and realized it was probably because of the way some people didn't talk directly to Barbara when they were around her. And how freaking annoying that was. "Some people treat my sister that way, and it always bugs me. Not too many, but still. They act like she can't hear them, or isn't smart."

[identity profile] kestrelswolf.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Why?" Firekeeper frowned.

Dinah stabbed the rice a little extra-hard with her chopsticks. "She's in a wheelchair. Um, do you have those back at Hawk Haven?" She frowned. "She had spinal damage, several years ago. She can't walk, so she has a special chair to help her get around. Some people just assume she's brain-damaged too."

Yeah, that might be an extra helping of caustic there.

[identity profile] kestrelswolf.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
"We do not," Firekeeper admitted. She bit her lip, trying to figure out how to phrase her next words diplomatically. "Wolves who is badly injured like such, they is dying, even if their minds is fine, because they cannot hunt, and the pack cannot spare time to hunt for them. But humans- humans is not wolves. I see this. I wonder why they cannot."

Dinah's jaw had started to clench when Blysse began talking, but slowly relaxed as she kept speaking. It took her a minute, but then she nodded, looking at both Blind Seer and Blysse. "Yeah. I do too. Barbara's the smartest person I know. And even when people get it, and suddenly realize she's not mentally handicapped, it bugs me that they ever had to wonder in the first place." She sighed, then swallowed another bite of rice. "I get that it's different for wolves, too. I mean. It sounds hard, really hard. But that's your life, and how it has to be."

[identity profile] kestrelswolf.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Firekeeper nodded. "Is not really the same as your sister, but I am having a human friend- Citrine. Pirates taked her, and cutted off some of her fingers. This hurt her mind a little too, I think, but not as much as everyone around her act. She was just a pup- a child- and these things what happened scare her, not maked her stupid."

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Dinah nodded hard. "Same with Barbara. After the-- after she got hurt, she could've just given up. She was an adult, not a little kid, so maybe it wasn't as bad as it was for your friend." Or maybe Barbara was good at faking it. She looked at Blind Seer. "After I got my mind around how different this place was, and after Blysse told me that you could understand, well... better safe than sorry. Maybe it would make me look dumb or naive to believe her, but I wouldn't want to insult you if she wasn't kidding."

[identity profile] kestrelswolf.livejournal.com 2009-01-20 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
Blind Seer inclined his head at Dinah in his own wolfish sort of bow.

"He say, maybe with this place being so different, someday we find a way for humans to understand his words."
