The Range - Girls With Guns [Tuesday afternoon]

Despite having all of her gun cases opened, Triela was rather distracted as people filed in. She was spending an awful lot of time looking over a piece of notebook paper in front of her and making thinking noises.

As people arrived she took a sort of informal poll. "So if the club were to take a field trip off-island to shoot things, would people be interested in participating?" It was all vague and unplanned, but she figured gauging interest was a good first step toward making plans.

"I've been finding that questions help? As long as you're asking other people stuff you can't tell them anything."

"What the heck would I ask?" Turtle wondered. "I'm not trying to sell you anything and elections are a long way off, and those would be the only things I can think of that I'd want to ask anyone."

"That, and if they have free food."

"You could ask if I have a crush--" Triela snapped her mouth shut and tried to cover. "You could ask if I have free food."

Triela very obviously didn't have any food at all, free or not.

"Do you have free food?" Turtle asked, and because she honestly seemed to want to know. "Do you have a crush on anyone? You do! Or else you wouldn't have brought it up. It's, like, a subconscious truth thing, and you tried to cover it. That means you do! Who? Who is it?"

"Wow," she found herself adding, "you were right. This is much better when it's not you talking about the embarrassing stuff."

"I don't have any free food," Triela answered. Then, in an effort to not answer the other question she kept talking. "I never should have suggested it. Clearly it was a bad idea. And I'm not entirely sure but I think I might have a crush on Sokka."

...

That could have worked out better.

"Oh, God," Turtle moaned, "just what he needs, another girl liking him, to feed his ego. And just what I need, another girl liking him, to make me feel pathetic for even thinking it."

"I'm never telling him," Triela said quickly. "And you better not either."

Because that might lead to actual discussion.

"Triela, sweetie," Turtle gave a sound that was definitely a laugh, but it was completely devoid of all humor entirely. "I don't think I'm going to have a choice in the matter."

"Just don't talk to him again!"

Ever.

"Believe you me," Turtle insisted, "I plan to avoid him like the plague!"

"Good." Triela nodded firmly.

"Me too."

"Good plan," Turtle said, returning the nod emphatically.

"Very." Triela nodded again.

Then: "Why Sokka?"

...

She immediately regretted asking.

"Because he's...really cute and funny and really knows how to sell an item," Turtle said. "Why do you like Sokka?"

"He has a good sense of humor and he's very... energetic? If there's anyone who's the opposite of repressed, it's Sokka."

Triela shook her head. "No more question," she promised. "Smack me if I ask another one?"

"That was a question," Turtle pointed out, "but I'm not going to smack you, because I'm too afraid of being smacked back and it hurting a lot."

"I think I'll shut up. Now."

And with that Triela shut up. She'd talk to Turtle again some other time.
