Second floor common room, Monday lunch time

Priestly had had every intention of hiding in his room after his class today, but he didn't have any food in the room, and, well, Malcolm hadn't exactly eaten much while lost in the closet yesterday.

Holy crap, how was he ever going to live that down? He'd figured out quick enough that other students had had the same sort of experience over the weekend, but he was pretty sure he was the only one who'd ended up stupid enough not to be able to find their way out of a tiny room with only one door.

So, anyway, here he was in the common room, cooking up massive amounts of steak and cheese sandwiches for anyone who might happen to stop by. Nothing said "please don't remember me as the preppie idiot I've spent the last six months trying very hard to avoid being seen as" better than a whole lot of greasy, steaming meat and cheese.

[ooc: open! Come join the punk in "omgwtf"ery!]

"Well aware," he said with a slightly self-depreciating smile.

"All the same, some are enjoyable. The one day, there were desserts that fell from the sky, very good ones."

"I checked the first few of them. When they looked all right, I started eating.

"To be honest, I wasn't that far from having been living on the street so I wasn't about to turn down food."

"I did for a few months, while I was in the Emerald City," he said, matter-of-factly.

"Too young to work, too old to beg very well."

"Charity pennies outside of the Unionist Church, bread that'd been tossed for the pigeons at St. Glinda Square, and gooseball at the field near Munchkin Mousehole, generally," he explained.

"Well, I wasn't comfortable," he said with a brief laugh, "but it was enough for the time. I was actually heading to enlist to keep body and soul together when I ended up here."

"The Home Guard," he corrected with a quick nod.

"The military, yes. I'd had some familiarity with soldiers as a child and word around the streets was that it was an easy pass to a bed, hot food in your belly, and mostly new clothes."

"By who?" and he shook his head.

"Things with Munchkinland have settled somewhat and it's not as if Oz has any other countries with access to us. We're a faerie country, set apart by the Deadly Deserts.

"And starvation's a surer death, of course."

"For all intents and purposes," he clarified, "no other lands have access to Oz. So wars are somewhat out of the picture. And at the moment, there's... er, well, there wasn't anyone stirring up trouble, other than Munchkinland to the East and that's if not settled than at least not actively violent.

"It was as good an option as any."
