The Salle [afternoon]

Nothing short of being actually set on fire was going to stop Ben from being in the salle today.

Leto was going to show him how to use those knives! If Ben were the type to squeal, he'd be squealing. Since he wasn't, he'd shown up ten minutes before the time they were supposed to meet.

You know, just in case.

[OOC: Ben's here for Leto, but feel free to catch him before/after/watch them...]

"Neither do I," Leto replied. "And I'm sorry about your mother. Mine died when I was born and my father shortly after."

"How shortly after?" Ben asked. He was still very worried about Luke's mental fragility.

"He lost his sight after my mother's death." Leto turned away. "He gave himself to the desert. It is the custom for blind Fremen."

Ben looked absolutely stricken. "I am so sorry."

"My sister and I were just infants." Of course, their parents were always strongly present in his mind, but it wasn't quite the same. "What happened to your mother?"

"She was killed," Ben said. "I was the first person to find her."

Leto wasn't sure whether Ben wanted to talk about it or not, but he finally asked: "How?"

"Lightsaber," Ben said shortly. "It leaves a pretty short list of who could be responsible for it."

Leto was about to ask if Ben would seek revenge, but he stopped himself, remembering their conversation at the Dance. "So who do you suspect?" he asked.

He shrugged. "Until I have proof, it doesn't matter," he said.

Leto might have asked if proof would be found without suspicion, but Ben would have to deal with grief in a way that suited him. "I'm sorry," he said again.

"It's life," Ben said. "There has to be balance. You don't learn anything from an endless stream of wonderful things happening to you."

He nodded. "Which does not make grief easier to bear."

[bedtime soon!]

"It's supposed to," Ben said. "Part of the Jedi Code says 'there is no death, there is the Force.' She's not gone, she's just...not here any more."

"And she will always be with you, in a way." He would have memories of his own of his mother, after all.

"Sometimes literally," Ben said with a tiny smile, "if she's like other Jedi Masters."

"Oh?" Leto looked curious.

"My father was visited by his old teacher for years after Master Obi-Wan's death," Ben said.

"Visited?" That needed some clarification, after all.

"We call them Force ghosts," Ben replied.

"Like the spirits of the dead? Leto asked. "Can you see then or just sense them?"

"See them," Ben said, nodding.

"Like in a vision?"

He shook his head. "Like they're standing right next to you."

"That must be comforting to you to know," he replied, sensing the curiosity of the ancestors in his mind.
