The Salle, Tuesday evening

Zayne had spent a lot of time since he got to Fandom working on his Force abilities. This was, unfortunately, to the detriment of his lightsaber skills.

Not that he had much in the way of lightsaber skills to begin with. That's why he was here right now practicing his lightsaber katas. Maybe if he showed enough improvement with the saber before next month's check-in on Taris, Master Lucien might show a little bit of pride in his Padawan. Or, more likely, maybe Zayne could learn to fly.

With some time to spare- okay, not so much 'spare' as 'devote to training', Jaina headed down to the salle with her lightsaber and remote. When she saw Zayne, though, she hung back for a minute to watch.

Zayne felt someone there, which distracted him enough to mess up his stance. After that, he missed a saber twirl he was supposed to do, and, well, at that point he might as well stop, say hi, and try again. "Hey, Jaina," he said, looking over. "How are you doing?"

"I'm okay," she said. Yes, that surprised her. "You look a little distracted, though."

"That's because I was distracted," Zayne said in a tone that suggested that he didn't mind. "I was concentrating a little too hard when I felt you walk in. Somebody walking in broke my concentration, I missed my next step, and I recovered well enough to stop without looking silly. Right?"

"Right," she said quickly, nodding. "So how were you doing before the distraction?"

"Rusty," Zayne admitted. "I haven't worked on katas in a long time. We haven't even done them on Taris in a couple years."

"Not really a surprise," she reasoned. "I mean, you come up on an enemy, you're not really going to be kataing them to death."

"I might if they decide to stand very still while still being very threatening," Zayne said. "I don't see that happening, though."

"Probably not," Jaina said. "Why are you rusty? Not getting enough practice here?"

"Definitely not in the way of katas," Zayne said. "But not with practical stuff, either, really. I've been slacking with this to spend more time working on my Force abilities."

"Sometimes you need to mix it up," she advised. "Want to get unrusty?"

"Of course," Zayne said. "What do you have in mind?"

"I've got some time," she said, unclipping her lightsaber from her belt. "A little sparring can't hurt." It wasn't what she'd counted on doing when she came down here, but plans changed.

Tahiri hadn't had a chance to practice yet this week, and after yesterday she kind of felt the need to do something particularly Jedi.

Yes, this was in part a way to say "bite me" to Riina, even if it did have practical purpose.

So when she headed down to the salle with her lightsaber and a remote, she was relieved to see Zayne there.

"Hey, Zayne," she said at a moment when she didn't think she'd be distracting him.

"Hey," Zayne said, turning to face Tahiri. Then he saw what she was holding. "Does everyone around here but me have a remote?"

"Apparently?" she said sheepishly. "You can borrow mine whenever, if you want to."

"I'll probably take you up on that," Zayne said. "I'm trying to get into the habit of working on my saber skills, so that would help me a lot. Thanks."

"No problem. I've been trying to get into the habit too," Tahiri commiserated. "I know I haven't been working on it as hard as I should be." Which was probably because most of her training had been, well, on the field, and she wasn't exactly dealing with a lot of Yuuzhan Vong encounters here.

Not that she was complaining.

"I don't know how training goes in your time. Do you have a Master who will yell at you if you don't keep your training up?" Zayne asked. "I find that's a good motivator to help me work a little harder."

"Master Solusar didn't yell at me much. But I didn't work with him for very long either." Tahiri's eyes darted around the room briefly, a self-conscious gesture. "After that it was pretty much working with Anakin, or Corran, or whoever else I could. My training wasn't . . . structured, exactly." It kind of showed; her footwork was lousy sometimes.

"Structure isn't everything," Zayne said. "You're probably doing better than me and I've had a lot of structure."

Tahiri gave him a slight, sardonic smile. "Well, 'get it right or possibly die' isn't exactly a tough choice, is it?"

"It would be easier if it was 'or definitely die', but I see your point," Zayne joked.

Tahiri actually laughed at that, if briefly. "I tried not to think of it that way in the actual moment. That tends to lead to panic, for me."

"I can understand that," Zayne said. After all, many of his missions eventually ended up with someone panicking, whether it was him or the civillians around him. "Anyway, if you're looking for something a little more structured, would you be up for some sparring?"
