The Range - Girls With Guns [Tuesday afternoon]

Triela looked pretty much the same way she always did as she bustled about setting up for the club. Which belied the fact that she was thinking furiously about whether or not it was worth sending the seniors off properly. She wasn't used to thinking about people in her circle of acquaintances just leaving, so it wasn't easy to know where to begin.

As people started to arrive for the meeting she gave each person a considering look. Was that someone she needed to figure out how to say goodbye to? Was that someone who might have a good idea for how to do that?

Of course, Triela being Triela, none of these thoughts kept her from grinning and welcoming people.

Dinah's leaving for a day after class. Then coming back. "Hey Triela. Having a birthday barbecue on Thursday. Are you going to be around?"

Triela blinked. Then grinned. "It's your birthday?"

"Yup! I'm going to be seventeen. Which, not a big deal number as birthdays go, but still, excuse for a party!" Dinah grinned. "It'll be out on the deck. People can come for just the food, too. I'm not going to kick any gatecrashers out."

"I might have to show up, then." Triela laughed and shook her head. "After all, I don't go to many birthday parties." They didn't really hold them back at the Agency.

"Cool! Pretty standard. Food and cake. Nothing fancy. But hopefully people will show up, even though I'd guess some people are saving their partying 'til exams are totally over on Friday."

"Well, if I'm there, you'll see me." Triela was already considering presents.

"You might have to leave?" Dinah asked, trying not to worry.

"Maybe," Triela shrugged. "My finals are over and Section 1 is stepping up its intelligence gathering operations. If they spot a target of opportunity I'll probably get a call."

"Oh," Dinah said, sounding subdued to her own ears. "You'll be careful, right? You'll call if you're gonna be stuck there long?"

"Oh, yeah." Triela smiled just a bit. "I wouldn't want you to worry." Even if she still didn't entirely get why Dinah would, she did understand that the other girl would worry.

"Great! Yay!" Dinah grinned at her in relief. "Hopefully they'll give you as much time as they can, though. I've heard the summer classes are fun and goofy."

Triela snorted in mild amusement. "I don't really do fun or goofy all that well." She reached up absently and straightened her tie.

"Which is why you need a class in it," Dinah pointed out, pleased with this opening. "And the play I'm in is on Sunday. I was hoping you could see it."

"What play are you guys performing?" Triela asked. She hadn't really been paying that much attention to it.

"Harry V. One of the histories. A couple battles, some politics, and treachery. You might like it," Dinah offered hopefully. Well, she might. It was complicated enough.

Triela cocked her head. "I know that one." Hilshire somehow thought the girls at the Agency would benefit from extensive study of English literature.

Triela thought Hilshire was silly sometimes.

"Cool!" Dinah said, delighted. "I'm, uh, playing Harry. The king." She grimaced a little. "We'll see if I can get through it without messing up, though." She smiled.

"We few, we happy few, and all that?" Triela asked, eyebrow raised.

"We band of brothers. Yup." Dinah nodded. "And once more into the breach, and about a zillion other lines. Plus more sword-work. IT's fun, but it's Fandom, soooo..."

"Hilshire made us memorize huge chunks of that play," Triela groused. "But we didn't perform it or anything." Which was probably a good thing. Triela wasn't a very good actress.

"Why'd he do that?" Dinah asked, curious. "I'm kind of surprised. You never mentioned any cultural stuff they had you do before."

"They don't really explain why they do what they do, but we have regular lessons. Most of it's basic school stuff like math and language and literature. I assume they want us to be able to blend in at least a little bit."

"And some of it's for operational flexibility. I speak four languages because that makes it easier to operate in other countries."

One of the advantages of little girls as assassins is that people overlook them. Which doesn't work if they stand out as really weird.

It was stuff like that, the 'operational flexibility, that often gave Dinah the chills about Triela's job. Just the cold-blooded efficiency of it. Not educating Triela for a future career, just a current target.

"Hunh. What four? And, what did you think of the play?" she asked, keeping her tone mild.

"It was okay, I guess," Triela shrugged. "I mean, parts of it were sort of interesting."

"Claes says that it's actually very good, so it probably is. I'm not really a literature person, I guess."

"They're always better in person. I could hardly understand this one when we started, and now I kind of love it," Dinah confessed. "So what is your favorite, if not Harry V?"
