The Deck, Monday afternoon

It was freakishly hot outside and Brooke had nothing to do.

This looked like the perfect opportunity to sit out on the deck with a bottle of water, a radio, and a hell of a lot of tanning lotion, all while praying she didn't fall asleep because wow would that suck.


[Open deck is open!]

"Oh, that explains things," she agreed. "The sun's way more fun when there's a possibility of say, a nice dunk in cold water when it starts to suck."

"Not on Arrakis," Leto laughed. "Even tears are a waste of moisture. Here, people waste water as it was sand."

[gobrookeyourself]

"Not waste," Brooke protested. "Just... use plenty of. Okay, maybe we waste it. Just a little. How do you waste sand?"

[future_sandworm]

"You can't. But you use water as if it was as readily available as sand." He shrugged. "It is not an issue here. We all have to adapt to our environment, and on Arrakis, failure to do so result in death quicker than in most places."

[bedtime!]

"Okay, the time and locale is all way cooler, but the quick death thing is a little scary," she said.

"As I said, we adapt." He grinned, then nodded towards the bottle of suntan lotion. "Need help with that?" Yes, he was aware of the connotations such an offer contained, and he didn't mind, but helping someone protect themselves against sunburn seemed like a generous thing to do.

Well no way was Brooke going to turn that down. "Couldn't hurt. It's so easy to miss a spot when you have to do it yourself."

"That's what I thought," Leto said, sounding entirely serious, even if there was a smirk hiding at the corner of his mouth. He got to his knees and poured some of the centent of the bottle into his hand, while trying to see where her skin was starting to get burnt.

She turned a bit to give him better access to her back, as that was genuinely a problem area to reach, moving her hair out of the way. "It's really nice of you to offer."

He applied the lotion, rubbing it into her skin. There was no discomfort at touching someone he barely knew, or the slightest tension about it. Brooke was an attractive girl, but he had offered no more than help with suntan lotion. "Burning your skin in the sun is never a good thing," he said.
