The gym, late Tuesday morning

Dinah got in earlier than the time she'd set with Tony, and got through her weight reps and a warm-up before stopping to practice her forward roll on the mats. Sometime, she was positive, it'd come in handy. You just never knew when.

"Hey," Tony said, when he arrived. "Should I stretch out or something here?"

"Yup! Get nice and loose first," Dinah said, grinning and doing another diving roll, then coming up to stand next to him. "You don't want to pull anything while we're doing this." She was wearing her Save Darkest Night! T-shirt and had her hair up in a ponytail, trainers on and ready to punch. Or teach. All the same.

Tony attempted some leg stretches he vaguely remembered from old P.E. classes.

Dinah glanced over. "Arms too. Like this." She stretched her arm behind her ear, holding it there for a minute, reaching down her spine, then pulled it across her chest, then repeated it on the other side. "No dislocating your shoulder." She grinned at him. "So, want to start from the very basics? Or show me what you know already?"

Tony copied the stretches she showed him until he felt pretty warmed up. "This is what Arthur was teaching me," he said, showing her the punch. "And I know some other stuff, but it's more like dirty tricks than real fighting."

"Dirty tricks are good too," Dinah agreed, and nodded at the punch. "How about some kicks? They're not just for girls." She grinned at him. "And people don't usually expect them if they don't have the same kinds of training."

"Kicks are good," Tony said. "Show me what you got."

"Okay!" Dinah bounced, then got back into place. "So. Legs apart, bent at the knees a little. Posture straight." She checked that he was paying attention, then lifted one leg, bent at the knee, and then snapped it upward suddenly. "Like that. So you keep your balance, but if someone's close enough, you get the power from the speed. Make sense?"

Tony imitated her stance and attempted the kick, but he was off balance and wobbled a little.

"Hmm. Okay, bend your knees a little more. And do it slower," Dinah advised, trying to remember what it had been like when she learned this. "And keep your arms close to your sides, ready to punch someone." She did it again, even slower, then snapped out a punch from her shoulder forward. "We should try this on the bag, maybe that'll help."

Tony bent his knees a bit more and tried it a few times. When he did it slowly, he felt like he got it, but when he tried to speed it up, it still wasn't quite working.

"Bag," Dinah decided, heading over to the WaveMaster. "Okay. Mostly you just need practice, because your muscles will remember it after a while. And you need somewhere to aim it, so you can figure out the control better." She grinned at him, then kicked the bag, hard. "Aim for where someone's hip would be. Most guys protect their groin anyway. And then where their knee would be, then you can stomp on them when they fall down."

"Yeah, everyone goes for the groin," Tony muttered. Especially shadow-possessed women trying to kick his ass. He moved over to the bag and aimed a few kicks at it.

"Well, it is a good target. Better!" Dinah grinned at him, and said, "I can show you a few more kinds, side kicks and crescent kicks and back-kicks. If you mix them up with some punching, it can be really effective." She tilted her head, considering. "Arthur's probably a better person to teach you throw combinations, girls have a different center of gravity, so the approach is different."

"Yeah, but you're so much nicer," Tony pointed out. "Is it really that different?"

Dinah laughed. "He can be nice!" Well. "Sort of." Um. "Okay, he can be good, and one of the things he's good at is training. Just because I'm nicer doesn't make me better."

Tony smiled. "How about you teach me some stuff and then he can tell me how I'm doing it all wrong?"

Rolling her eyes, Dinah snorted. "Oh, why not. It'll be one more thing he can tell me I'm doing wrong too." She grinned. "Soooo... kicks, then blocks, then palm-strikes. Works?"

Tony nodded and aimed a kick at the bag. "I bet he even gives notes in bed," he said.

"TONY!"

Someday she'd stop squeaking when he said stuff like that. She really looked forward to that day. There'd be champagne.

Tony grinned. "Sorry, I forgot I was talking about your future baby-daddy."

"Noooo!" Dinah took the opportunity of being in the gym to try to trip Tony into the punching bag, even while flailing. It's a talent. "Not even! Not ever! God, you have to quit doing that!"

... the sad part was, she was now thinking that maybe Arthur would give notes in bed. (Higher! Lower! Faster!) "I hate you so so so so much!"

Tony lay sprawled on the floor for a moment, laughing.

"Nnnnngh!" Dinah punched the bag, still blushing and trying not to laugh. If she could just not laugh Tony might stop, but.... "So mean." She got her breath back and offered him a hand up, eyes narrowing. "Just for that, I'm gonna make you do elbow strikes too."

Tony snickered and accepted her hand up. "Sure, if you gotta. What're elbow strikes?"

"Like this!" Dinah showed him: elbow coming forward fast to knock someone in the face, back to get someone in the ribs if they were holding onto you behind you, over to dislodge someone trying to grab you. "And...." Two-handed, upward on each side. She stopped for breath, doing her best Arthur impression and accent. "If you believe you can handle that, Mr. Foster."

Tony snorted. "I don't know if I can. Show me again?"

Dinah stuck out her tongue, then grinned, showing him the forward strike, and back, a lot slower. "You might want to do some weight training too, you know. If you're going to be getting into more fights," she added more soberly. "I know you've got magic and setting fire to things by thinking about it. But still."

"I'm not planning to get into fights," Tony pointed out.

"I don't think you have to plan it here, they throw fights like parties, just kind of spontaneously," Dinah pointed out. "Just... keep it in mind." She paused, and sent a crescent kick at the bag, curving around in front of her. "Um. Tony? If I had a question about something... you wouldn't laugh, would you?"

Tony aimed a kick at the bag. "Question about what?"

"Ummm...." Stare hard at the bag. "Straighten your knee out a little. It'll help. Uh. I got this book?" Her voice rose in a question without her conscious volition. "About. Well. Stuff." Dinah pushed her hair behind her ear. "That. Um. Wasn'tcoveredinHealthclass."

"Hm?" Tony straightened his knee a bit and tried again. "Oh! That kind of stuff. There's a book?" he asked. "I mean, I've got some videos...."

"No no no no no!" Dinah might have been traumatized by proxy. "I mean. Thank you?" She slumped against the WaveMaster, one hand over her face. "I just. There's stuff in the book, it's a, um. Manual? That I wonder about. A little. It's got details, and, uh. Stuff. I just..."

"I won't laugh," Tony promised.

"Thanks," Dinah mumbled, then straightened again. "So, yeah. Let me show you the side-kick, it's really good getting some power into a blow..."
