Third Floor Common Room - During Lunchtime/Afternoon Classes

After her Civil War Reenactment class (and seriously, what were her parents thinking with that one?), Joan decided to make lunch in the common room. Nothing fancy, just some sandwiches and cut up fruit, but she had spent the weekend hiding from the insanity of the new folks and figured it was time to get out and meet people.

Rather than put the TV on and deal with trashy talk shows or soap operas, Joan had the radio tuned to an 80s station and was bopping along to the music as she worked.

Shilo wandered through and noticed the fruit. And then saw someone she hadn't met yet. "Hello," she said, unsure if she was heard over the radio.

"Oh, hi!" Joan said, looking embarrassed. "I'm Joan. Are you new?"

"Yes," Shilo replied. "My name's Shilo. Are you having a party or something?"

"Nice to meet you, Shilo," Joan said. "And, no, I just figured I'd make lunch for folks before heading out to the cabins. Help yourself."

"Thanks," she replied, grabbing a ham sandwich and a few of the apple slices. "I didn't think about breakfast today at all, after all the food I ate at the picnic Saturday." And only waking up on Sunday for a long, hot shower, after which she promptly returned to the bed, because she had an honest to God bed to sleep in.

"One thing you will learn very quickly is that there is always food around here," Joan said. "There should be sodas in the fridge."

"Nice," Shilo said, opening the fridge door. "I'm going to sound weird, but I've never had a soda. -My dad was super-strict about what I ate and drank." She looked at Joan. "So I guess what I'm asking is which flavors are the best?"

"Wow, um, maybe start off with a plain cola," Joan suggested. "The fruity flavors might be too sweet."

Shilo rummaged around, found one, and took a small sip. "Whoa, that's really..." Another small sip. "That's really different. I like it, but it's different."

Joan smiled. "The carbonation might tickle your nose at first, but you'll get used to it."

"That's what that is!" Shilo replied. "I was wondering about that. You said they made fruit flavored sodas too?"

"Yup. I think there's cherry, orange and grape in there," Joan said.

"I might have to try those later." Shilo hiccuped. "Oh! Excuse me."

"Yeah, that happens too," Joan said. "It's the carbonation."

She grabbed herself a sandwich and went to sit down. "So where are you from?"

"Hello!" Maron called cheerfully from the doorway. "Am I allowed in? Or am I only allowed in the one on my floor?"

Which didn't seem fair to her, but it was a good question.

"Any students are welcome in any common room," Joan assured her. "And I have sandwiches and fruit, if you're looking for lunch."

"New York City... and the year 2056. You?"

The whole 2056 threw Joan for a moment.

"Uh, I'm from Arcadia, Maryland. Present day."

"So you're not too far from home. That must be nice." Shilo began eating her sandwich just so the mun could finally use this icon in context.

Joan shrugged. "It's got good points and bad points."

"I can see that. I'm just..." How to put this? "I'm just excited to be seeing more of the world."

"Hurrah!" Maron grinned as she entered. "I thought so, but it's best to make sure--I wouldn't want to be breaking any rules on the first day of classes even if I don't have any today! Sandwiches and fruit sound lovely." Which meant she had to wander to the kitchen area. "Which cupboard has the plates, please?"

"I'm Maron," she added, with a grin over her shoulder. "And I'm so new I squeak still."

Joan nodded. "That makes sense. What's it like where you're from?"

Joan smiled and opened the cupboard with the plates. "There are sodas in the fridge. And I'm Joan. I've been here almost a year."

Oh dear. Oh dear.

"It's not the nicest place in the world. There's a lot of things wrong with it. I... sort of ran away from it, because I didn't want to deal with it anymore."

That was sort of the truth.
