Theodore Roosevelt Campfire: Monday morningish

There was a huge pile of stuff on the bed in alcove A1, because with a day free of classes, Francine had figured she might as well schlep her things over at a leisurely pace.

You know what wasn't in the huge pile of stuff on the bed in alcove A1? The marshmallows. Or the Hershey bars. Or the graham crackers.

Or Francine, because she was out by the campfire trying to get it started. Putting away her huge pile of stuff could wait. There were s'mores to be gobbled made.

". . . Okay, yeah, that might be a problem." Priestly shrugged. "If you gotta spare pair of pants you don't want any more, you could try that. Turns out khaki's really good for starting other fires."

She raised both eyebrows. "Do I want to know how you know that?"

"It was totally an accident. Well, the khakis part wasn't."

[thatsamilkshake]

"You were trying to set your pants on fire?" The eyebrows rose higher.

[lovemykilt]

"It was a form of protest," Priestly explained a little haughtily. "I wasn't wearing them at the time."

[thatsamilkshake]

"You had me worried for a minute there!" Like there weren't people at this school who'd be capable of doing that for their own bizarre reasons. "What were you protesting?"

[lovemykilt]

"Everyone keeps asking me that." Priestly shook his head. "I was protesting being told to wear khakis."

[thatsamilkshake]

"Well, that makes sense, I guess. "Francine shrugged. "Not a lot of point in protesting if people don't know what you're protesting about, though, right?"

"Oh, trust me, the people I was protesting at totally got the point."

And sent him to boarding school.

"I can imagine." She snickered. "But if you tell people about it later, they're gonna want to know why. It's a good story."

[lovemykilt]

"See, the first coupla people I told knew exactly what I must've been protesting. I mean, burn an American flag and it's pretty obvious you're protesting America. Burn khakis, you must be protesting something to do with what khakis represent, right?"

[thatsamilkshake]

Ah, but now he was talking to a nice rural-turned-suburban girl, half of whose pants were made of khaki. "What do khakis represent? The evil of functions that are too dressy for jeans?"

[lovemykilt]

"The evil of people declaring that there are functions too dressy for jeans."

[thatsamilkshake]

"I like dressing up." Francine shrugged. "But I guess there's a difference between that and people making you."

[lovemykilt]

"Exactly! If I'm more comfortable in jeans or cargo pants or a kilt then I shouldn't be made to feel as though I'm . . . less than people who wear khakis."

[thatsamilkshake]

"You have a point," Francine acknowledged. Not that that point would stop her from strangling her brother if he tried showing up to her fairytale wedding someday without a suit and tie.

"Yeah, well, my mom didn't much think so. But anyway, I got some experience with starting fires is what I'm saying."
