The Rocky Bits, Tuesday Afternoon

Arthur'd left a message to all about the change in location for today's drill, last week. He was in something of a better mood, although yesterday's spar with Lady Elspeth had knocked him back down to a normal grouch. At least he no longer looked like he was contemplating murdering his co-conspirator.

He didn't start speaking until he was fairly sure they'd gotten their haul of people for the day. "Today, we begin to work with our terrain," he announced, "And each other. You all have vastly different skills and powers at your disposal; now's the time to share them. You'll be venturing out to different defensible locations, spread over the seaside to your right," he nodded, "the Rocky Bits at your left," another nod, "And the ground you're standing on. Pick one, and set up a plan to make it defensible."

After a quick glance at Arthur, to make sure he had finished, Leto continued: "And after having made your own strategy for defense, some research will help you develop it. Find examples from various points in history of successfull defense of a geographic location similar to the one you chose and write a short report on your own conclusions."

"Cool. I've got TeeVee, but I'm free after that too, I think. I should check in with Professor Atreides, though, and see if she wants our tutoring day to be the same. So how're you doing meeting newbies? And your Little Sib?"

"Ugh," Tahiri said at the mention of her little sib. "He's a kriffing idiot with a giant ego, and I want to lock him in a room with Kyp Durron and see if they kill each other. That is, if some other student doesn't do it first, because he's angling for it. His roommate seems okay, though. I didn't do a whole lot of meeting new people yet."

She shot Dinah an apologetic look. "You know what they say about good first impressions. I wouldn't be leaving my best ones right now."

"Yeaaah, gotcha," Dinah drawled, knowing how that went for Tahiri. "What's the -- kriffing?" She grinned. "What's the idiot's name, so I know to avoid him or at least be prepared?"

"Alex Karev," Tahiri said with no compunction whatsoever about telling people to stay away from the person she was supposed to be mentoring. "He's pretty hard to miss. You can see the ego coming seconds before he's within sight."

Dinah hooted with laughter, then said, "Could we aim him toward a couple other people we know here? Just for the entertianment value?"

No, she's not thinking of anyone in particular. And she would've bet on the home team in question anyway.

"Dinah," Tahiri blurted out, laughing. "You should go into intelligence if you keep thinking up sneaky plans like that."

Dinah gave her an evil crazy grin. "Spy queen?"

Well, she kept secrets well. Just, the maniacal laughter might give her away.

"Oooh, good crazy grin. Keep practicing that, and if you ever decide your galaxy's not interesting enough I might be able to get in a good word for you with a few crazy intelligence types." Not that Tahiri actually had any real pull with the Wraiths, or that she thought Dinah would take the offer seriously.

"I should get a spy theme song if I get recruited," Dinah said, showing just how seriously she was taking this. "Something like AKA or Mission Improbable. Or James Bund!" She smirked a little, then said, "Plus it might cut into the private investigation business."

"So? You can multitask," Tahiri retorted. "Hire the right help, and you'll be fine."

Dinah looked speculative for a moment, then rubbed her hands together gleefuly. "My cunning plans to control all information in this quadrant will not be usurped by business responsibilities. I'll make them work together, information feeding into the revenue stream, muahahahahaha."

"You'd be really good at it," Tahiri said, grinning. "See?"

"As long as no one asked me to calculate the actual revenue stream," Dinah said, dropping the silly voice, then grinned. "So you're taking Rangering as well as Terrain? I almost signed up for that one."

"I'm TAing for Terrain now," Tahiri said with no small hint of pride -- very unbecoming for a Jedi, Tahiri -- and nodded. "And I had Flight, earlier. As long as the school keeps offering classes I'm going to be able to use, I should take them, right?"

"Definitely," Dinah agreed. "And, go you, with the being the TA! Especially for Professor Atreides. The silly courses are great too, though. I've got TeeVee on Friday, and, uh." She looked a little embarrassed. "Superhero Fashion on Thursday."

"Let me know how that goes," Tahiri said, one eyebrow quirking up with amusement. "I might know a couple of people who might get a kick out of the notes for that class."

"I'm thinking camera photos. Unless the teacher stops me."

"Even better," Tahiri decided. "You have to let me know how that class is. I thought about it, but well . . ."

She looked down at the Jedi robes, in shades of tan and brown, that she was wearing (all her flightsuits were in her laundry pile at the moment) and shrugged. "Jedi don't really go in for fashion, anyway."

Unless they were Kyp Durron, but that was Kyp.

Dinah snickered. "Noooo, yeah. Of all the things the Jedi can do, I don't think any of you ever get called in as fashion consultants."

Someday, some version of Ben would describe a Jedi meeting as a showroom for the world's dullest textile factory. ~~Much like Eddie Izzard's routine about monks' clothing.~~

"Hey, it's functional," Tahiri felt obligated to argue, even though she much preferred the active-duty jumpsuits to her robes. "

"And therefore not fashionable," Dinah pointed out with a grin. "Superhero costumes are supposed to be both. As well as hide your identity. And possibly be a 'look at me, I'm a hot role model' thing."

"Too much work," Tahiri decided. "Too much hassle. I don't ever want to be a famous Jedi, I just want to do my job."

If Riina would let her, some days.

"Me too, but ... well. I don't want people finding out who I am, and Helena just refuses to wear a mask, so..." Dinah shrugged. "I could use a few ideas, at least."

"Point," Tahiri conceded. "Your world does stuff differently, of course."

"Yeahhh. Of course, Superman doesn't wear a mask, but everyone's pretty sure he looks different when he's not saving people," Dinah speculated. ~~Sure, glasses, that's a disguise.~~ "I dunno, I figured it'll be fun, if nothing else."

~~And give her mun a chance to pull out every silly outfit she's worn in 60 years.~~
