Behind the Dorms and Beyond, Tuesday Afternoon

Today, one of the two men in charge wasn't bothering to look the other way whenever the other strayed into his vision. Arthur, it seemed, had decided to declare himself Past That for no reason at all. "Afternoon, students," he called, "Today, there is no time to fool around. We'll be mapping the shoreline by foot, in twos and threes. If you have the means to venture out onto the water, today or this week, I ask you to do so as well. We will continue to gain oversight over the island and its structure." A pause, in which he failed to seek out Ino in the audience. "Next week, you will be facing one another in a mock battle. Bring practise weapons."

Noting that Arthur had decided to make an effort, Leto saw no reason not to do the same, and so he did acknowledge his presence, even if he didn't address Arthur directly. "And for those of you who were here last week, you are welcome to hand in the reports on strategy," he continued, then shot a glance at Arthur, to check if he had anything to add.

"For those of you who are still looking to gain some fighting skills, you can come to Leto or myself," Arthur continued, shooting Leto a glance from the corner of his eyes to see if he agreed with that, "Or find a willing teacher now, before we disperse. If you are new, you may speak up now to let us know what your skills are, so everyone will be thoroughly informed in the event of an emergency."

Leto gave a nod in response, but had nothing more to add. He found himself a little relieved that things were a little less tense than last week.

Ino was mollified. Honestly, the idea of being useless!

"Sure," she was what she said though, "I don't have Staffy with me, but for this it shouldn't be too bad, yeah? I can always come back with it."

"We should be all right. We can take good readings of the shoreline and I might be able to get some depth measurements. I would have brought supplies for that if I'd known that's what we were doing."

"You just randomly carry that stuff with you?" she teased. "Let's head out that way first, yeah? We don't want to walk through the preserve, it's huge, that'll be easier to fly over."

Re: Arrive/Mingle

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"That makes sense," she agreed as she started walking.

"I don't, which is the unfortunate problem," she teased back. "I was just going to try and find a stick to get approximations; see where it'd be easy to land boats and such."

"Maybe a weighted rope?" Ino suggested, casting her eyes to the ground to check for sticks. Most of them seemed rather way too small though. "Though I don't know if that'd work--depends on how heavy the rope end is, I guess, and the current, right? I don't have much to do with, like, water and landings and stuff."

"I can probably get one, a stick or a vine or something, once we venture a little closer to the preserve and take the water readings on our walk back. Sound like a plan?"

"Sounds like a plan," she said, "I've got a notebook, for taking maps, 'less you've got anything better? My paper is lined, the stuff I've got on me."

And, well, in a notebook.

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"I have the same," she had to admit, "and a sketchpad."

She'd picked it up for her 'fashion' class.

"The lines might be useful as units of measurement, though."

"True," she conceded. "Though they're lucky we've got pens and paper on us for the afternoon! Hard to map without even that much, don't you think? I wonder how they're going to match up the maps?"

"We probably should have discussed some sort of universal unit of measure. I would assume meters would be the most reasonable but who's to say what people use, considering this place?"

She breathed in and out.

"I have to mention training to one of them soon enough and hand in my report," she told her.

"Maybe I'll try and slide in a point about that kind of thing as well."

She made a face. "I'd talk to Arthur, if I wanted to talk to either of them, I did actually, while we were there." Ino preferred Arthur over Leto. "I didn't even think of it, though Arthur said that over the water I ought to go about 150 to 200 feet out in my inspections."

Re: Arrive/Mingle

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"I get along better with Leto," she said honestly, "though if he does start being stubborn, I'll go to Arthur. It's important; knowing the terrain is wonderful, but if you can't communicate properly with the people you're working with due to different ideas of what things mean, well, it doesn't really matter."

She and her brother had survived because they'd worked together, because they'd been in sync.

"Arthur listens," she explained. "Even when he's being a jerk, or calling me names he listens even when I call him names back. Leto, I find, is the type to just pretend what I'm saying has no merit 'cause of my attitude."

She sighed. "I love teamwork," oddly enough, "my team at home is the best at it."

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Leto seems to listen to me. Then again, I tend to be very blunt with him. Arthur, on the other hand, doesn't respect me because I'm a girl and he thinks my weapon is a joke."

She shook her head.

"He makes my blood boil."

She huffed out a sigh as they kept moving.

"My brother and I made a very good team; we compliment each other in a lot of ways. I miss him, sometimes. Though I try not to think about it."

It was a yo yo. Ino could see why Arthur would find it ridiculous, honestly. She didn't say that though, since some people back home fought with odder things.

Like their spinal cords.

"He respects me just fine as a girl," Ino said, glancing up at her. "Maybe it's 'cause I'm a spy and I'm not a warrior the way he is?" She shrugged a bit. "It's kinda best to not moan too much 'bout what's left at home? Otherwise you get held back in working with others here 'cause they aren't the ones you'd rather."

"I've been doing my best. Eliot was the only other person I spent any time with for most of my life.

"Well, other than the folks at Ringos."

She lifted her head.

"But I'm okay. And he's doing all right; I need to call him again to make sure things haven't exploded or anything. And I think I'm doing all right with the people here."

Her lips quirked.

"You weren't allowed out much, were you?" Ino said, to all appearances unconcerned. "Teamwork is more 'bout being able to work with everyone than being able to work really good with only one person--if that one person went down, you've got to be able to keep it together."

Somewhere, Asuma-sensei was hiding a grin at the lecture.

Re: Arrive/Mingle

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"At all," she clarified, "He's the only 'team' I ever had. Even my work at Ringos was usually solo. I bussed tables."

She didn't speak to 'if that one person went down' because if Eliot went down--

Fiona didn't even want to think of it.

Re: Arrive/Mingle

[personal profile] intraspective 2009-05-19 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," Ino said, as they approached the coastline. "That's not real teamwork. Not real trust either. In a bad situation, if you're the one that goes down, you've got to be able to trust that your team will get the objective done instead of falling to pieces--and they've got to be able to trust that you can do the same for them. Love's fair wonderful, but it's a pain in the field."

Re: Arrive/Mingle

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Neither of us fell to pieces," she said firmly, "even when everything was falling down around us. And he's the only person I trusted until I got here."

Even Great-grandmother Cee had her secrets. Fiona still didn't like it. She wasn't sure she trusted anyone here too much, but she trusted them enough to tell them what she could. Dinah. Griff. Leto and Kenshin and even Ino to some extent. Maybe Karla eventually.

"And as our objective was to accomplish something that would prove that we should be allowed to live, it would be rather pointless to let the other one die to accomplish the objective.

"Either way, we managed it."

"I'm not talking about your particular situation in which all hell broke loose," she said, a bit impatiently. "And I'm not asking about it 'cause while I'm nosy that sort of crap is up to other people. I'm just saying that making it through once doesn't mean it's real teamwork. It just means you naturally work together well enough to survive one situation."

Re: Arrive/Mingle

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Four," she clarified with a sideways look at Ino. Ino could have her opinions; Fiona had her own about some things.

"And we had our struggles with it. I suppose I'll have to see how it is to work with more than one other person and adjust accordingly, though."

She looked around.

"You want the left half or the right half of this stretch?"

"Try doing it as a living," she said, with a roll of her eyes. "It's different. I do know what I'm talking about."

Ino darted ahead, pulling out her notebook as she did. "Left!"

Re: Arrive/Mingle

[identity profile] cutsthestrings.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
She got out her own notebook.

"I probably will have to, at some point. And I'm sure you have valid points, but I won't really be able to apply them until the situation comes up. Saying and doing are two different things."

She nodded to Ino, leaving the point for the moment, before she headed off to the right.

"And thinking with only the pasts experience will get you killed," she called back, looking rather precariously perched on a bit of rock that she probably, had she not been a ninja, wouldn't have gone near, and utterly confident. Ino flipped her notebook open, pulling the pen from the spiral binding and starting her sketch, moving from precarious outcropping to the next with an absent-minded ease.
