Main Campfire, Tuesday Evening

Alex felt restless enough to emerge from his alcove and head out to the main campfire again. It was easier to both smoke and stay warm since it'd gotten weirdly cold over the last few days. Whatever. He was from Iowa. He was used to this type of weather.

Didn't mean he would pass up a fire.

So, he slouched down against a log, crossing his feet at the ankle and leaning back to blow smoke into the air. It was the second week of classes and, amazingly, they weren't going that badly. Of course, considering the classes, Alex didn't know how they could go badly.

He'd take the good news while he could. It didn't happen often.

Amber's experience with Alex thus far was definite sarcasm. "Pleasure, Rose. I'm an oldie; newly graduated."

"Lasted it out, huh?" Rose asked. "Was it good while it lasted?"

"Mm, it's been great, actually," she answered. "You know, few complaints. How are you finding it so far?"

"Strange," she said honestly. "I've been at boarding school since I was four, but this one is definitely different."

For one, it wasn't run on a nocturnal schedule.

She quirked a brow, smirking. "Strange is a decent word to apply to Fandom. You'll get used to it." Maybe. "Always expect the unexpected and strange will almost become normal."

Rose laughed. "Wise advice there, graduated one. If you have your degree, why are you still here?"

"I'm TA'ing for Loki and will head off to Minnesota the end of this semester," she answered. "Plus, postponing leaving the boyfriend as much as I can."

"Awww," she teased though she thought it was sweet. "Who's the boyfriend? And Loki?"

Amber grinned. "Liir Thropp. Have you met him? He's great and an excellent cook. If you don't know him yet, befriend him quickly, you won't regret it." She could talk about Liir forever, however, she'd spare Rose and stop with the cooking.

"Loki, or Mr. Cuss as I like to call him, is a teacher. I can't even recall what the hell he's teaching. I show up with coffee and donuts and prepare to laugh my ass off because he's freaking hilarious."

"Haven't met him yet," Rose said lightly. "But now that I know, I'll remember to keep from flirting with him." She made a face. "Just my luck not to get a funny teacher. I've just had Master Skywalker so far. I'm not thinking there'll be a lot of laughing in his class."

Amber cackled. "Do you often flirt with your teachers, Rose?" But, uh, yeah... "Professor Skywalker is an excellent teacher but funny? Not so much," or so she's heard. "Unless of course he's been bitten by a gremlin."

Rose burst out laughing as well. "With Liir! I won't flirt with Liir!" She shook her head. "And if you knew me, you'd know that was a big deal! Master Skywalker seems okay. Less of a dried stick than most teachers. Not quite the flirting type either though."

Amber turned red and tilted her head back, laughing. "Nooo, I didn't mean with Liir!" Oh, man. "But right, okay. Thanks for that, even though it's not a problem. And yah, Professor Skywalker is married, so flirting wouldn't be a good idea I don't think. What other classes are you in?"

Rose could see why the man was married. Even with the scowl, he was way better looking than a teacher should be.

"Umm, Etiquette something and Criminal Justice," she said, sounding less than impressed.

Yes, he was very attractive. So was Mr. Bond. Rose might like Mr. Bond did she ever take one of his classes.

"Nice." Hm. Amber thought they sounded a bit boring. Worthy, no doubt, but boring.

"What grade are you in?"

"Going to be a senior," Rose said with a sigh. "So eleven more months and I'm free."

"Not too bad," she said. "Classes are easy and time seems to fly, just as it usually does. It's pretty much never dull around here either, which helps."

She nodded, watching the fire for a minute. "I'm hoping to be allowed to go home after the summer. Even though it seems okay here."

"You didn't want to come here then?" she asked. "You're not the only one in that same boat if that's the case. Fandom grows on you; it's like we're one big family."

"I was expelled technically," Rose said lightly. "I belong there though."

Oooh! "Yah, wow. What for?" Amber was nosey curious.

The curiosity was pretty amusing in itself. "I'm supposed to protect Lissa, my best friend," she said. "And we left school. Which was protecting her but they don't see it that way."

An eyebrow shot upwards. "Why does she need protecting?"

Rose took a breath, amusement gone. "The Moroi always need protection. That's what I'll swear to spend my life doing when I turn eighteen. But Liss - she's the last of her House. So her more than anyone."
