Main Campfire, Tuesday Evening

Alex felt restless enough to emerge from his alcove and head out to the main campfire again. It was easier to both smoke and stay warm since it'd gotten weirdly cold over the last few days. Whatever. He was from Iowa. He was used to this type of weather.

Didn't mean he would pass up a fire.

So, he slouched down against a log, crossing his feet at the ankle and leaning back to blow smoke into the air. It was the second week of classes and, amazingly, they weren't going that badly. Of course, considering the classes, Alex didn't know how they could go badly.

He'd take the good news while he could. It didn't happen often.

"Jalapeno." It was the first word that came to mind.

"Halapeeno," Adora repeated, not sure she understood this one. "Well, it's wonderful to meet you, Halapeeno. Are you enjoying your time in Fandom?"

Oh wow, she'd believed him. Gullible with a capital G. "I haven't left yet. That's about as enjoyable as it'll get for me."

Thinking him perhaps insane, Adora decided she would tread carefully.

"Do you wish to leave so soon? You must have something amazing pulling you back home."

He did want to leave but it wasn't because of something amazing. "I can't leave so no, there's nothing amazing."

"Oh! Did you fall down a well?" She understood that.

"Uh, I'm sitting in front of you," Alex pointed out. "So no, I'm not down a well."

"No!" Adora laughed. "I meant to get here. Some people fell down wells or collapsed in the ocean and so are trapped."

"I...took a bus." She was an odd one. Like a 'dropped on her head' odd one. "I'm not trapped. I'm just not allowed to leave."

"Oh." How odd. "Might I ask why not?"

"No, you can't," he said, shaking his head. "Not something I wanna share."

Now she felt terribly for him. "Well then, I'll just help you make the most of being here!"

"...how?" He wished he hadn't asked that question as soon as it came out.

"By being your friend, of course," Adora told him, reaching out to pat his knee.

"Are you for real?" he asked, almost staring.

"Do I seem unreal?" Adora asked, concerned.

"Yes." To him, yes she did. "They don't make people like you on this planet."

"I'm actually half Earthling," she told him. "My mother was a scientist from this planet."

"Did she experiment on you?" he asked.

"No." How strange to ask that. "Your world must be a very....special place."

"Not as special as your head," Alex said.

Adora blinked. "Excuse me?"

"Hmm?" He was pretty sure he'd been clear. "Not as special as your head."
