Main Campfire, Tuesday Evening

Alex felt restless enough to emerge from his alcove and head out to the main campfire again. It was easier to both smoke and stay warm since it'd gotten weirdly cold over the last few days. Whatever. He was from Iowa. He was used to this type of weather.

Didn't mean he would pass up a fire.

So, he slouched down against a log, crossing his feet at the ankle and leaning back to blow smoke into the air. It was the second week of classes and, amazingly, they weren't going that badly. Of course, considering the classes, Alex didn't know how they could go badly.

He'd take the good news while he could. It didn't happen often.

That got a blink.

"I'm mysterious?"

She laughed. "I spoke with Amber earlier, and she mentioned you. Apparently I'm supposed to make friends with you because you cook well."

"Well, if you like brownies and baked goods, then you'll always find some in my room. Most people around here know I make things all the time, but I don't eat much."

"What's the point then?" she asked curiously.

"I like to experiment," he admitted with a duck of his head.

"And hone my skills. Besides, introductions go better with a chocolate."

"Do you - want to cook for a living?" Rose said. "Or just for fun?"

I don't know.

"It'd be nice, I think, but I'm not sure. There's a lot to deal with before I get to that point."

She looked curious. "Like what? Or do you mean college and stuff?"

"Not exactly. Things are rather complicated back home."

Rose made a face. "I can understand that. "How do you mean?"

"It's not exactly safe for me at home," he had to admit, looking at the fire, "though I'm working on that."

She nodded, watching him. "Should I ask?"

"You can. It's... not exactly a secret, but neither is it something to be spread around, especially considering one of the professors this semester."

He looked around the campfire.

"I'm reasonably sure certain elements would rather I was dead is all."

Oh, was that all. Rose probably shouldn't be so used to that.

"For who you are?" she asked curiously. "Or is it a family thing?"

The wince was almost a smile.

"For a few different things. Suffice to say it's complicated."

He glanced back towards the school.

"The professor in question holds the dubious honor of being one of my mother's friends from school as well as the former, well, former leader of the country."

Rose wrinkled her nose in sympathy. "You had to be thrilled to see her show up then."

He shrugged.

"She helped me when she could. And she's actually tutoring me in magic while she's here since I've been going on my own the last year or so with a lot of books."
