Main Campfire, Tuesday Evening

Alex felt restless enough to emerge from his alcove and head out to the main campfire again. It was easier to both smoke and stay warm since it'd gotten weirdly cold over the last few days. Whatever. He was from Iowa. He was used to this type of weather.

Didn't mean he would pass up a fire.

So, he slouched down against a log, crossing his feet at the ankle and leaning back to blow smoke into the air. It was the second week of classes and, amazingly, they weren't going that badly. Of course, considering the classes, Alex didn't know how they could go badly.

He'd take the good news while he could. It didn't happen often.

Amber's heart thudded heavily in her chest. "I... you want to talk about it now then?"

He watched her for a moment.

"Only if you're ready."

"I don't know if I'll be ready ever," she whispered.

"Then now might be the best bet."

"Um, okay. Okay, sure..."

Gah. She wasn't expecting to do this tonight.

"I just am not sure, you know, how to go about it. It's hard to talk about my leaving."

"Well, what's bothering you about it? How about we start there?"

She looked down. "I'm worried about us. I'm worried about Gladys. I'm worried about my sanity in having to stay with ma." A beat. "That's a start."

"What are you worried about in regards to us, Amber?" he asked gently.

"And what can you do about Gladys?"

"Whether or not we're going to make the long distance thing work," she answered.

"Nothing.. I suppose."

"If you can't do anything about it, why worry? It's useful to make you plan out something but it'll just eat you alive if you keep putting energy into something you can't do anything about."

He knew that from experience.

"As for us, well... what is it that you're worried about specifically? What is your fear?"

Amber inwardly groaned.

"Do we have to talk about this now?" If there were any plans being made to break up with her, she just wished he'd say it. That was her fear, right there. She just couldn't voice it.

He was starting to wonder if he was speaking Arjiki or something.

"No, we don't. We can just... enjoy the fire for the moment."

Like he couldn't tell she was stressed?

"Tomorrow," she promised. "Or Friday. Just me and you."

She didn't particulary care to talk about this around a campfire with other people looking on if they wished.

"Friday," he agreed, "and perhaps we'll head back to the rooms for a bit of privacy."

She sighed in relief and everything about her relaxed. "Thank you, Liir. Friday then. I'll come around closing time at the store and well go to the dorms."

"Sounds like a plan."

He leaned over and kissed her cheek then, to tell her without words that, well, it was all right.

She leaned into him and was content to stay close for as long as they both liked.
