The edge of the campgrounds, early Thursday morning

Dinah had left a message for Priestly, and was now warming up and stretching on the edge of the campground-- and trying not to squee too loudly about the moose. A tiny little stampede of them was rushing across the path.

Maybe they could race them through the preserve? Moose running?

"Oh yeah," she agreed. "It's not bad - for a class." She shook her head. "Not really. I'm a bodyguard."

So much easier than explaining the Guardian gig.

"Oh, cool." Dinah said, stretching out one arm, tilting her head at the new girl. Pretty, matter-of-fact, didn't seem too phased; and probably from somewhere not too different from the US, if she was planning that as a career. "I always think of bodyguards at big guys, but there have to be female ones too... So you have to know what to look for, in order to protect your assignment, right?"

Rose nodded. Darkness, fast movement, bloodshot eyes. The looking for it was easy. "It's something we train for, yeah. I'll swear my oath in eleven months assuming all goes well."

"Oath? And wow, aren't you young for that?" Dinah asked, then paused. "And if I'm asking too many questions, just let me know." She grinned. "Investigator. I just like finding stuff out."

"It's okay," she said, mostly amused by Dinah's enthusiasm. "We swear when we're eighteen. You know, once you get to be an adult and all, they'll let you out to actually guard."

"Intense," Dinah observed, thinking, then asked, "Do you get any say in who you get to guard? And where-when are you from?" She grinned. "I'm mostly from here-now, just a city up the coast that most people aren't familiar with."

Rose grinned. "Montana. Which city is it? New York or something?" She shrugged. "Technically no, we don't. The ones we guard can request, but the Guardian Council makes the final decision. I'm going to be assigned to my best friend, Lissa." She hoped.

"New Gotham City?" Dinah said, eyebrows going up. "It's supposed to be the size of New York." She tilted her head, listening. "Oh, cool." Lots of pressure, though, to put on someone to keep their best friend safe. Then again, could you stand to let someone else have the job? "Is she royalty or something? Or her family in politics?"

"No, I don't know that one," she admitted. "Must be a different - something." World, dimension, time-thing, whatever. "Royalty. So really, yes to both."

"Only one person here has, so, no surprise." Dinah shrugged, resigned to it. "Wow. There's royalty in your Montana? I can't imagine anything but big sky and elk or something in my world."

Rose laughed. "There's a lot of room under that big sky." She tilted her head towards Dinah. "So, an investigator? Of crimes or what?"

"Yup. Private." Dinah grinned. "Probably missing persons and cold cases to pay the rent. My uncle and my almost-brother-in-law are cops, but somehow I don't think I'd fit in on a conventional police force." She didn't sound too regretful about it.

"Would you even want to?" Rose asked. "Do they wish you wanted to be a cop?"

"My uncle does," Dinah admitted. "He's police commissioner, so he's got his bias." She smiled a little. "I might go to the police academy, for the education, and to convince him it's a bad idea. If he keeps on about it, I mean." She shook her head. "So did you always know you wanted to be a bodyguard?"

Rose shrugged, not really wanting to go into the blood whores and the rest of it. "I've been training since I was really little. It's what I'm meant to do."

"Cool." Dinah grinned. "Maybe you can run with us, sometime? I'm waiting on Priestly, the guy with the mohawk."

"Don't know him yet," Rose said. "But I'd like that. It's always more fun to run with other people." She made a face. "And I probably should get going before I wuss out. It's good talking to you."

She gave Dinah a nod and a smile before taking off again down the trail.
