LBJ Campfire, Thursday Night

Sometime during the day, Sam had come to a sad realization - he hadn't had nearly enough s'mores for the amount of time they'd been out at the cabins. When the evening rolled around and the sun finally went down, he lit the cabin's campfire and set himself up with all the necessary supplies, to cook for himself and for anyone else who sat down.

It wasn't long before he figured out that his marshmallow roasting stick was also good for keeping tiny moose away from the fire. It was kind of amazing how this place still found ways to weird him out, even after all this time.

"Hey Sam," Jennifer said, approaching the campfire. She was on her way back from town after work, so she was still in business casual. "Mind if I join you?"

"Not at all, have a seat. How's it going?" he asked, offering her the bag of marshmallows.

"Pretty good," Jennifer said, snagging a marshmallow and then sitting. "I'm actually starting to really like it here."

Sam didn't quite cackle, but his laugh was awfully close. "I think that's the real magic of this place. No matter how miserable someone might think they're going to be here, they end up liking it," he said. "Are your classes going well?"

Jennifer nodded. "Criminal Justice is tough, but rewarding," she said. "And my new job is, too."

"Oh? Where are you working?" Sam asked.

"Cabot and Associates," Jennifer said. "The new law firm. Miss Cabot is a wonderful boss."

"You want to go into law someday?" Sam asked. "I'm leaning towards the same thing. At the moment, at least. I might change my mind once I actually start in school."

"That's the idea," Jennifer said. "Do my part towards making the world a better place."

Sam grinned. "That's how I'm looking at it too. I want to help people, but I want to do it in a safe way, you know? A sensible, normal way."

"Exactly," Jennifer said. "My dad has the law enforcement side down, but I'm a little small to do that myself."

"My family...we help people, but it's not exactly the safest job in the world," Sam admitted.

"How?" Jennifer said, not sure what he meant. "Like, private investigators?"

"Um. Kind of?" Sam said. Dean had been trying to get him to be more open about things, and this seemed like a good time to try that. "Do you believe in ghosts, and things like that?"

"It rained glitter last week," Jennifer said. "And I somehow traveled in time when I got here. There's a lot I can believe in right now."

Sam laughed. "Open-mindedness. That's good to have here, seriously," he said. "My family hunts ghosts, and demons, and other evil spirits and things that try to hurt people. We don't do it as much these days, since we're kind of settled here, but it's still the family business. I'm hoping to do something else instead."

"That sounds pretty scary," Jennifer said. "Law work might even sound boring after that."

"It is scary sometimes, and dangerous," Sam said. "And it's not that I don't think it's a necessary job, you know? I just think I'd be better off with something normal. I don't think law work would be boring, not if it was for something important."

Jennifer nodded. "That's what I think too," she said. "How can it be boring if you're doing your part to make the world better?"

"It's not a job for everyone, but I think it's still really important." Sam smiled at her. "Do you have lawyers in your family, or are you kind of pulling this out of the blue too?"

"Not quite," Jennifer said. "I have some reasons, but... you don't want to hear them, I think. Serious stuff."

"I'm sorry," Sam said sympathetically. "You don't have to talk about it. But I'm sure your reasons are very good."

Jennifer nodded. "It's the sort of thing you wait to share," she said.

"Lucky for you, I'm a patient person," Sam replied.
