Magical Reserve - Behind the Cabins, Friday

There was a distinct lack of cauldrons to give this sort of gathering a magic-y sort of credibility. There was, however, some biscuits picked up from JGoB.

And some tea. Because it calmed his nerves on ~~being back in the damned woods~~ gathering people like himself all together in one place. There was always the possibility that one of them would try to kill Arthur. Simple facts of life, that.

He rather hoped that wouldn't be the case at all.

Really? Seriously? From J,GoB? Francine gave Merlin a Look when she showed up with a tray of fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies.

She could at least help with that, even if she couldn't do anything magic herself. ...Or bring herself to edit his posters.

"Hi," Karla said, looking at the cookies Francine was carrying. "Do you mind if I have one of those?"

"Sure; that's what I brought them for!" Francine held out the tray and smiled. "You're in the Culture Shock class with me, right? I'm Francine."

"Yes, I think so. I'm Karla. I'd offer my hand, but I think keeping cookies on the tray beats etiquette. Or at least it does for me." She took a small bite. "These are delicious! I'm starting to think I'm the only person on this island who cannot cook."

"Thanks." Francine laughed. "You're not, trust me. But it's no problem around here anyway; all you have to do to keep yourself fed is wander around the campfires and the common rooms. There's always somebody making something."

"Yesterday was wonderful for that," Karla said, giggling. "While I was working on my web, I had several of the tiny moose decide that I needed feeding. So the'd wander off and come back bearing food. I really wish I could have kept one. To keep myself from starving if nothing else."

"I'd be really worried about that statement if you hadn't said they were bringing you food. No eating anything wearing a hat!"

After a second to filter, Francine backtracked to ask, "Your web?" She tried to decide if Karla was using slang she wasn't familiar with, or just a were-spider. You never knew around here.

"I couldn't eat anything as adorable as they were, hat or not," Karla reassured her.

"My web," Karla agreed, nodding. "I'm a Black Widow, and I spun a tangled web for the multicultural fair today. I do hope you'll come to my booth! You'll be able to experience Kaeleer first-hand."

Karla was not helping the were-spider assumption, was she?

[Were-spider? I'm so glad I'm at home for that. It had me cackling for a good minute.]

Francine blinked, but politely. "See, this is why I'm in the Culture Shock class. I have no idea what any of those things are." She gave a shrug small enough not to dislodge the cookies, and a smile. "But if it's a magic thing, I wouldn't. I don't have any powers ~~that I know about~~. I just showed up to support Merlin and bring cookies."

"Are you Merlin's Consort, then?" Karla asked, helping herself to another cookie. "I met him at his Beltane gathering. I don't remember if I saw you there."

Karla wasn't going to mention that it had been because she had been horribly, horribly drunk at the time.

Francine winced a little at the mention of the Beltane party, but nodded. "I was there. He's my boyfriend; I'm not sure if that's the same thing."

"Right!" Karla snapped her fingers. "I keep forgetting that term. Umm...Consorts are a little more formal. And, uhh, detailed." There were contracts involved.

"Oh!" Francine's eyes widened. "Like married? Noooo. We don't do that until we're older." She had to correct herself though, considering the context. "Where I'm from. Merlin would've known what you meant. And probably freaked out."

"Oh, no! Marriage is something different. Although the Consort does get a ring," Karla mused aloud. "Consorts are sort of in between boyfriend and husband, I guess. It's a formal Court position. For some, it's simply a contract to be fulfilled, for others, it is that intermediate step between."

"Hunh." Francine shook her head. "I don't think we have anything quite like that."

"Don't worry," Karla said, chuckling. "I've been saying that about your world ever since I arrived."

"You are awesome." Leda told Francine when she spotted the cookies. "What is it they say? An army travels on it's stomach?"

Francine had heard the expression, but it made her grin anyway as she held out the tray of cookies. "Well, that'd be one way to sneak up on the enemy!"

"It might not work if there's not too much cover." She took a coffee with thanks.
