FDR Campfire, Saturday Morning

Arthur's dreams last night had been full of strange images of old, powerful wolves and golden lion cubs that he chose not to consider further. It was Morgana who got the nightmares, not him; he'd always slept fitfully and where needed.

Still, they had instilled a sudden restlessness in him, and rather than turn to the salle as he generally would, Arthur's travels brought him no further than the campfire that morning. He had no meat left of his last hunt, nor any furry fish to roast, so instead he sat down by the edge of the pit.

He did have some dried meat, and a few more dates he'd nicked off Leto earlier (well, not nicked. Commandeered. Requested, maybe, with implicit permission). They'd do for breakfast until Merlin showed up to get him enough for a proper one.

I'll bring it up at the next meeting. See who else has any skill at those sort of shields," Merlin said, nodding and looking at the fire closely. "Perhaps that will give them a reason to work together."

"I do," Karla offered. "But, as I said, it certainly isn't a one-person job. And since shields are the most basic aspects of defense, even those who do not have such protections really ought to learn them."

"I've done it once."

Then again, he'd been very upset at the time. He did magic he hadn't realized he could when he was mad.

"Only once?" Karla gaped at him. Shields were one of the first thing the Blood were taught as children. "How do you feel safe?! Perhaps the first thing we should do is figure out how each person does magic and who is compatible to teach who. And then teach everyone else how to shield."

"Well, I only needed it that once," Merlin replied. "I mean, I believe I could do it again if I needed to, but it hadn't been anything I expected to do."

"You hope," Karla pointed out. "I'd rather not have my safety rest upon what I believed would happen. And it happening once isn't really a guarantee of it happening again."

"Which is another reason for the reserve. Where we can all help each other with our spells and the like."

"So then can we pretty please with sugar on top make learning to shield a priority? Magic-users aren't much use when they've been skewered."

It wasn't begging if your tone was sardonic. Trust.

Merlin just shot her an amused look. "I'll speak with Tony and Lady Zoe about it."

She returned it with one of surprise. "We need permission?" she asked, dubiously.

"It would help things if we had that, yes." Trust the servant here, please and thank you. "Then we can have a set place and trust that everyone knows where it is."

"If you say so." Karla shrugged, her expression unchanging. Trust was a bit much to ask. She was willing to take his word for it, however.

"We should probably learn to coordinate with his group, too," she said, nodding towards Arthur. "The combination of sorcery and steel is devestating."

"We will." Of course. "When our own group is less chaotic."

Karla laughed. "That is something I can agree with."
