After the disaster that was his encounter with Emma, Jack did what he had wanted to do to start with. He went home to Sebastien at first light on Sunday.

Thirty-six hours later, he was back in Fandom, well-scrubbed, missing a bit of blood, and considerably more philosophic about the whole thing. He hummed to himself absently as he flipped through channels on the television. It almost all seemed idiotic, but he supposed that was a part of this time.

"Russia's always a little mad," Jack said, not biased at all. "And I'm not to that one yet, but I have been reading the Greek. I'm learning lots about the strong men of Athens."

Valentine chuckled a little. "And have you formed any opinions yet on those strong men of Athens?"

"Propaganda's interesting, isn't it?" Jack asked rhetorically. "He wanted his people to keep that piece of land, and he'd tell them anything about themselves to make them act."

It reminded him of the growing tension between the English and native-born Americans in his New Amsterdam.

"And what do you think about that?" Valentine asked, wondering if propaganda was going to be her theme this week. She would look forward to it if it was; she was good at propaganda. "Do you think it's wrong to feed the masses what they're hungry for if it gets them to do what you want them to?"

"Not especially wrong, no," Jack decided. "Perhaps vulgar if taken to extremes. But if all people need is a good push, and you know how to give it ... it's hard to argue against it. For a good cause, of course."

"And who determines what's a good cause or not?" Valentine said with a small smile.

"Why, Valentine," Jack said, leaning toward her and grinning even though it wasn't really a joke, "I do, of course."

"Oh, of course," Valentine gushed, with just the right amount of eyeroll and grin to balance it out. She held up her hands, in a gesture of astonishment at her inability to grasp such obvious things. "You do. What was I thinking? Well. Clearly. I wasn't thinking at all."

"Did you want to help?" Jack queried, half-laughing. "I might let you, you know. I can't do it all myself."

"It is a pretty heavy burden," Valentine mused, "but I think I might be up to the task."
