Magical Reserve - Preserve Next to the Cabins, Wednesday

Merlin may not have been as bouncy as the last person to lead a reserve this week, but he was at least energetic. In a far more British way.

There were varieties of tea. New doors opened to him there.

"Hello everyone. Today we'll be working on finding at least a partner to work so any sort of weaknesses you have may be covered by them and also the other way around. I know we don't all know each other and out abilities yet, so this will just be a bit of a practice round. If you find someone you work well with, good. If not, you can always keep trying."

He smiled brightly, nodding at them all. "Just pick a partner now and discuss our try to show what you can do. Er--within reason of course. I don't think we'd be allowed back here if someone burned down the preserve."

Karla's innocent face turned into one of genuine fond amusement. "That's very true," she said, deciding to let him off the hook a bit. "My hardest lecture to follow was the one about gender norms. She made it sound like all the differences between males and females was do to culture, or something. I just don't get that."

"What's it like where you're from?" Zack was so happy to grab on to some kind of different topic, here. "I remember you mentioning that guys weren't healers, but there's probably way more to it than that, huh?"

"Right. Males can do healing-type things, like binding wounds and setting bones and stuff like that, but they can't spin Healing webs and the like. Males can't belong to female castes, and females can't belong to male castes. That's not culture, it's fact."

Karla will be very surprised when she meets Saetan and Daemon.

"So, different abilities are just naturally gender-specific? That's actually kind of neat! It's sort of..."

He was raking his brain, trying to come up with an example from home. He was failing, too.

"I guess the closest I've got is that I've never seen a woman in SOLDIER. But I couldn't tell you why, so it's probably a weak example."

"Females can fight in your Realm, right?" Karla asked, puzzled.

"Sure they can," Zack agreed, nodding. "And there are girls as well as guys in the Turks, which is another high-ranking branch of ShinRa's military. Kinda military, anyhow. Actually, I'm not really sure what it is that the Turks actually do."

Perhaps that was for the best, at the moment.

"Huh. Maybe when you go home, you can ask. Both why there aren't any females in SOLDIER, and what the Turks do." ~~In Kaeleeran, Karla's name translated to 'Bad Idea Bear'~~.

"Hey! There's an idea!" Well, so far as Zack was concerned it was a good one! "I'll do just that, next time I'm back in Midgar. They'll probably start getting missions for me again in no time, now that I'm getting settled out here again."

Well, a guy could dream, anyhow.

"What kind of missions?" Karla asked, interested. She sat down on the air, and munched on another cookie. "Want one?" she asked, holding her second-to-last cookie out to him.

Giving Zack sugar. Karla was a bad person.

"Mostly monster-hunting," Zack replied, and then he grinned and accepted the cookies, and THEN he blinked and had a good gawk at where she was sitting down. "And that is the neatest trick I think I've ever seen anyone do, ever."

"What kind of monsters?" Karla asked promptly. "What? Sit on air?" She grinned and shook her head. "Bah. Wait till I try to be impressive. This is basic Craft, kid's stuff. I taught Ben and Dinah both to airwalk in a day."

She frowned briefly at the air behind him. "Sit down," she said, gesturing. "Tell me more about those monsters of yours."

Zack blinked, turning around to look at the aforementioned air behind him.

Yep. It was totally air.

"Sit down like you are?"

He had to clarify, here, lest he attempt to do the same and end up making a spectacular plummet to land on the seat of his pants on the grass. And then he'd be more than happy to talk about monsters.

"It'll hold you, I promise," Karla said. Pratfalls were only funny when they were deserved. "If you put your hand out, you'll feel that it's solid."

He considered for a moment, patting at the air behind him thoughtfully, and then he grinned and took a seat.

So cool.

"Thanks! So, what did you want to know about the monsters where I'm from?"

"I don't know. We don't really have monsters where I'm from."

Well, they did. They just all walked on two legs.

Zack nodded thoughtfully. Hm. Which should he talk about first, then?

"There are all kinds of different monsters on my world," he began. "I mean, all kinds. Ones that swim and ones that fly, some look like dogs and some looks like cats, some look like plants, and others don't look like anything else you might ever see. Lots of them cast spells, too, and all of them are dangerous, though some are more deadly than others."

"Where do they all come from?" Karla asked.

That... was a good question.

"You know, I have no idea? I don't know if anyone really knows. They've been around for as far back as anyone alive can remember, at least. Like birds and trees and rocks." Zack shrugged. "Maybe they've just always been there."

"Has anyone studied them? Discovered their habits? That would probably given some idea where they came from, wouldn't they?"

"Oh, sure," Zack replied, nodding. "ShinRa's got scientists studying monsters all of the time. But if they've found anything, they're not really sharing it all with the public. Maybe monsters are just that difficult to study?"

Or maybe ShinRa was performing twisted experiments on them, and it was best that the public never find out. But it wasn't as though Zack knew that. Yet.

"Perhaps your world was filled with an overabundance of monsters then. Stranger things have happened, I'm sure."

"Like glitter rain, and sewer alligators that burp goldfish," Zack agreed with a laugh. "I think I'm almost at that point where I'll believe almost anything, around here."

Karla snickered. "I hate to say it, but I feel the same way. I'm starting to think the island is sentient. And has a rotten sense of humor."

Okay, Zack was going to have to lean forward and waggle his fingers in the air, making his best spooky-voice now. It was mandatory.

"It knoooows!"

It did. It really, really did.
