The Valley Campfire: Monday Afternoon

Anyone coming across the campfire today would find Layla sprawled out on a blanket as she traced a convuluted route on a map of the Northeastern part of the United States. She was lying on her stomach with her feet up in the air as she munched on a snack of raisins and goldfish crackers

And while a fire wasn't lit in the firepit, there was a cooler of drinks and some goodies from J'GOB sitting on top of them for visitors to enjoy.

[Open campfire is open]

"Plenty," Tybalt replied evenly. "Montagues, poor taste in dress, cheap cigars, prohibition, poverty, liars and cheats, and madmen. I would continue, though I fear I might keep thee all day, should I choose to do so."

"Oh, no," Valentine shook her head, smiling a little. "Do go on. It's very interesting so far."

Someday, the residents of Fandom Island would learn that it was never a good idea to encourage a Capulet. Honestly, now.

"Is that so? Then perhaps I ought to add more to the list? The living dead, then, for death was never intended to have an exit to the rear. Those who deem it absolutely necessary to point out that my manner of speech differs from their own, on the unlikely chance that perhaps I've not noticed. Women who not only know too much, but who possess knowledge of that which nobody was ever meant to know. And, for lack of items for this list which may be spoken of freely in mixed company, cat food."

That last point totally threw off his poetic groove, yes. And Tybalt totally didn't care.

Oh, but Valentine would disagree. The last part seemed to give a nice crisp finality to the whole speech, like a short and succinct period at the end of a sentence. She grinned a little more.

"I can see," she said, "why those things might cause your distress. Surely, though, that can't be all? Although I also get the feeling that if you were to continue, we might be at this all day."

And she liked how he talked, the same way she liked listening to how Blysse talked, but with him, she felt more encouraged to mimic it a little, the way she felt she sometimes did when talking to Jack as well.

"We might very well, indeed," Tybalt replied, smirking deeply as he realized that she possibly just enjoyed hearing the sound and flow of his words. "And I might carry on into the evening and through the rise and fall of the moon as well, if I am to put breath behind every item and notion which I have been given cause to loathe. I've not yet heard of that which thou art disinclined to give favour to, of course, and I daresay it would be rude of me to continue to press onward, denying thee an opportunity to share the same."

"Oh, no," Valentine laughed a little, holding up her hands in protest. "I greatly doubt that any rant or rave that would come from me would be anything more than a pale whisper compared the the expertise of your own discourse. Besides that, I'm actually quite agreeable and can't think of anything at the moment in which to actually find disfavor in, except perhaps the occasion of not knowing who I'm speaking with. I can easily fix that by way of introduction. I'm Valentine."

"And I am Tybalt, of the house of Capulet," came his easy reply. It came more readily than most things he said, as of late. Hearing someone not only make an effort to emulate the Verona tongue, but hearing them do so well was very welcome, indeed. "And now that introductions have been made I fear that I've taken away all cause for thee to grouse at all, and thus with it, half the conversation as well."

He was smiling, however. Which suggested that he didn't think that all was lost, really.

[identity profile] a-demosthenes.livejournal.com 2009-07-21 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, I believe you were carrying the greater half of the conversation to begin with," Valentine noted with a light smile of her own, "and I didn't mind being relieved of the burden. Besides, the good thing about conversations is that there's never a shortage of which direction they can take; they're hardly restricted to predetermined routes of topic. Where are you from, Tybalt? Where might the house of Capulet be?"

[identity profile] feline-royalty.livejournal.com 2009-07-21 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"In fair Verona," Tybalt replied, "is where we lay our claim. There are those who've not heard of it before, though it is a city of notable size off the opposite coast of this very nation. I suspect, in such a case, that the shortcomings sit not within maps and atlases, nor in the education of those with whom I've already discussed my home, but instead in this island's own backwards ways and its odd sorceries."

Fancy Tybalt speak for 'this island is nuts.'

"And thee? Whence dost thou hail?"

[identity profile] a-demosthenes.livejournal.com 2009-07-21 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"No where near as fair, I'm sure," Valentine said with a grin, "although it is a place of green trees where one can breathe. Greensboro in the state of North Carolina, on this coast, although I am sure I should find a visit there now to be unlike home at all, for I hail not from this time, but ore than a century and a half ahead of when we are now."

[identity profile] feline-royalty.livejournal.com 2009-07-21 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"And I from o'er a decade ago," Tybalt noted, quirking an eyebrow upward faintly. "The difference that thirteen years has made has been a trial to accustom oneself to at best. I lack the imagination to grasp what so many lifetimes might mean."

[identity profile] a-demosthenes.livejournal.com 2009-07-21 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Thirteen years and he spoke like that? It was Valentine's turn to quirk an eyebrow. "It might surprise you how, in the grand scheme of the movement of time, how much things can change in a sliver and how little they can in a chunk. I believe that I've been more capable to handle an insufficient technology and a distinct lack of workable space travel since I knew to expect it when I came here, a luxury I've come to understand not all of my peers here have."

[identity profile] feline-royalty.livejournal.com 2009-07-21 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"I was simply told that I was to attend boarding school on the Eastern coast," he shared. "Upon my arrival here, I spent entirely too long thinking that all the persons I'd met had lost their minds. Now, I simply find myself wondering if perhaps it was in fact my own sanity that has fled this damned place."

[identity profile] a-demosthenes.livejournal.com 2009-07-22 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
"I am hardly a psychologist," Valentine said, "so I shall make no suggestions regarding the state of your sanity, but I will say that you're at least in the company of others who go through the same oddities and strangeness and peculiarities, and my own knowledge of such things before I attended here is thanks to my brother preceding me by a few semesters."

[identity profile] feline-royalty.livejournal.com 2009-07-22 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ah, so thou wert forewarned," Tybalt noted, smirking faintly again. "One might find oneself needing to defer to thine expert opinions, then, should any more of this island's ludicrous behaviour deign to show its craven face?"

He was absolutely making a note of it already; if the island went insane, find Valentine.

"If nothing else, thou might be able to confirm the veracity of the jarring sights mine own eyes refuse to allow me to believe, and as such, perhaps my dignity will remain safe, though my sanity may not."

"If nothing else," Valentine agreed with a nod and a slight smile. "I make no claim as an expert in these matters, however, so consider yourself forewarned that there maybe be holes in my assistance. I also have a habit, it seems, of not attracting as much of the unnaturalness for myself as others, though I am hardly immune. I fear that even mentioning the scarcity of my own personal conflicts with this island's stranger moment, however, is like taunting a coiled viper with a stick, and I might be finding myself weathering the worse for wear in the future. The Island seems to almost have a sadistic sense of humor with such things."
