Wendy the Werewolf Stalker Campfire [Wednesday Evening]

It was beautiful outside this evening, and so Emma found herself out by her cabin's campfire; cigarette in one hand as she balanced her notebook on her knees. It was easier to work on her creative writing assignment out here than in the cramped quarters of the cabin, and if she didn't like what she wrote, well, she could always burn it.

And really, there was no downside to lighting things on fire.

"I'm never 'only' anything, darling," Emma practically purred. "I don't like limiting myself."

"But please, take a seat. Hello. I'm sure someone left out a bag of marshmallows around here somewhere."

"Is that for creative writing?" Jean... so had yet to start.

"Supposedly," she sighed, wrinkling her nose at the notebook. "Yet I seem to be suffering a wretched case of writer's block. I haven't had to take an English class in over a year, and I haven't faintest idea where to begin."

"You could start with something interesting about people you've met here," Jean offered. "Some of the stuff Mr. Dayspring has told me about is probably going to be where I start."

Way to sound like a preteen girl with a crush, Jean.

"Spreading second-hand gossip? How positively lurid," Emma teased lightly. "What sort of whispers has this 'Mr. Dayspring' been murmuring in your ear?"

"Nothing lurid," Jean replied, rolling her eyes, but still smiling. "He's the one helping me with my powers."

"Everything's lurid, darling, especially if he's an older man," Emma pointed out. "Why, it's positively scandalous! I do hope he's teaching you something useful."

"He's helping me not have to shield so much," Jean confided. "I think I'm doing better."

So wasn't, but it was getting there! Kinda! Maybe.

"You won't need to shield if you just ignore them," she replied. "Most people aren't thinking anything interesting anyway. It's like having the radio on in the car; it's just background noise until your favorite song comes on."

Yes, Emma passively eavesdropped on a regular basis. It was easier than the exhausting task of trying to block everyone out all the time.

"That's what he said," Jean said with a sigh. "You focus on one thing at a time."

Heh. 'That's what he said'. Emma was going to resists somehow twisting that into something wickedly perverse.

"Find a decent anchor," Emma suggested. "If I get too annoyed by the herd, I just seek out Karla or Mr. Nolan or someone else, and practice multitasking. See how long it takes the teacher to figure out I'm not really listening to the lecture, but gossiping with someone two rooms over."

She even did actually do that sometimes, too. But usually she just sifted around for decent gossip. It was more reliable than the damned radio.

"I need to learn to turn down the shouting first," Jean replied.

"Earworm them," she said instantly. "I'm serious. Just a few bars of a song, and they'll end up too busy trying to think of something else to be loud and annoying."

"Really?" That was... actually good advice.

"Plant the first verse of something pop-ish and not completely offensive, and just let them go." Emma may have done this more than once or twice, yes. "Amusement for hours, and you get decent music out of the whole thing."

"I'll think about it," Jean granted her. Oh, she was totally going to if it got too bad.

The first hit was always free, darling. Once you started down that slippery slope, you would never stop.

That was Emma's hope, anyway.

"Do," she replied, giving the other an amused smile. "And what else have you been up to, besides trying to learn how to shut out the world?"

"I had a date on Monday," Jean said, grinning far too much. "And then we have another on Friday."

"A date? Darling, that's the kind of scandalous gossip you're supposed to start with," Emma sighed. Totally not fair. Emma could barely get kissed because some people had issues with girls in their head. Spoilsports. "Really. Were you raised by wolves?"

Jean rolled her eyes again. "His name is Tybalt and it's not even anything serious."

Tybalt. Emma filed that away for future reference; it might be fun finding out what sort of limpid specimen of masculinity would willingly castrate himself for a date with the ginger.

"It doesn't have to be serious to be fun," she replied, rolling her eyes. "Is he any good at least?"

"Good?" Oh, Emma.

"Yes, good," Emma said patiently. "Decent taste in dinner options, remembers to pay for his date, and his attempts at kissing don't resemble a dead fish. Those are the general guidelines of a 'good' date."

"Oh! Yes. We went to the Italian place and now we're going to go to the movies." A beat. "And we haven't kissed yet."

That was second date stuff there.

"You did verify he is male, yes?"
