The Roof [Tuesday, Evening]

Week and a half as a cat, and being up here with a fag in hand was one of the big things she'd missed. That and being able to drink... and maybe a few other things.

But yesterday she'd had Alex unknowingly taunting her with the idea of cigarettes, and, okay does it really surprise anyone this was the first place she came?

It was going to take her a little time to get back into the human mindset where she wasn't all cutesy and purring and sitting up here on the edge of the roof for a smoke would get her a good part of the way, she hoped.

Fucking island.

"You were that clingy cat," he said and rubbed his face. Great. "I've had other things on my mind, I wasn't thinking that you'd gone and turned into a fluffy animal."

"I wasn't thinking you'd to be such a cat person." Because he'd actually been all nice and attention giving.

"Shut up," he groused, shaking his head. "I didn't expect some cat to crawl on me and decide to take up residence. Besides, you were the one that decided I was comfy enough to lay on. Out of all those people in the room, you wandered over and sat on me. I didn't think you were such an Alex person."

"You're surprisingly comfortable," she told him, and shrugged.

And that was all the was to it.

"I'm not a cat person," he said and shook his head. "I was in a decent mood and you were mildly entertaining. And clingy. You were really goddamn clingy."

"You weren't exactly pushing me away," she pointed out.

He'd even made extra space for her and everything, aww.

"You had your claws near my groin," he retorted. "All versions of you seem to like that area."

"Got me what I wanted at the time." He'd kept stroking, so... win for her.

"You just remember that you came to me," he reminded her. "All those other people in the class, you decided on me and that wasn't random selection on your part."

Effy snorted. "And how would you know that?" she asked.

"I just do." He wasn't sure at all but he could damn well sound sure. "And you were pretty damn affectionate while you were there. I didn't know you had cuddling in you."

"Don't get used to it," she warned.

"What? Don't wanna cuddle with me?" he asked, pouting exaggeratedly. "Don't wanna snuggle up to me and sprawl out? Awww."

"Didn't know you were craving that so much," she said, smirking.

"Your sarcasm detector is broken," he said dryly, rolling his eyes. "Besides, I'm not letting you near me until I make sure of a few things."

Effy raised her eyebrows slightly in curiosity.

"... Like what?"

"You own a baseball bat?" he checked because he could still feel that thing against his throat sometimes.

"No," she said. Weird question. Why the hell would she? "Never even touched one." Very much an American thing.

He nodded and crossed his arms, glancing at her from the corner of his eyes. "Thrown anyone into any walls lately?"

"Oh yeah, all the time, just for kicks," she answered sarcastically.

Like she had the strength to be flinging people around. Really.

"Don't be fucking sarcastic, I've got reasons for asking," he answered, almost snapping before shaking it off. Wasn't her fault, he knew that. Still. Fresh memories and everything. "You think I'd waste your time with stupid questions?"

Effy frowned, looking over at him. "Well, they're sounding pretty fucking weird."

"... And no."

"You've been a cat," he said, rubbing his face and pushing everything back down. "Of course they sound pretty fucking weird to you. You don't have some secret thing for torture, do you?"

"You're the one goes around stabbing people with pencils." A little bit of snark was almost automatic.

At least she added a, "No, I've never tortured anyone." Of course she hadn't.

And that only reminded him of who else he'd stabbed recently and he glared again.

"Thank you for the reminder. I know who I've stabbed," he said and shook his head. "It doesn't matter, I just had to check. You picked a good time to be a fucking cat."
