Alex was finding himself more attracted to the roof than the deck lately, which was a change from earlier in the summer. He couldn't really pinpoint why save for the fact that he liked smoking on the roof. Today was no different. He'd lit up as soon as he'd pushed onto the roof and was halfway done before he'd even sat down on the ledge.

Things felt slow lately, like they were moving in slow motion and it was making him itchy. He really didn't want to think of it as bad omens considering he still was trying to not think about that other Fandom but those thoughts crept in more likely than not.

He shook his head at himself and made his mind go blank. Easier to deal with.

"How surprising," he said dryly. "I couldn't tell that at all. Sorry...that you had to come back."

She shrugged. "I wanted to." She shot him a quick smile. "I didn't really want to want to, but - I'd rather be here most of the time."

"Got your wish," he said, shrugging a shoulder. "What'll you do now?"

"Pass my goddamn trials in the spring," Rose said. She shrugged. "What'll you do now?"

"I don't know." He shrugged again. "I don't have anything to look forward to like you do."

"Why not?" she asked, cocking her head to watch him.

"Because." It was all he could get out while he wrestled with the question of actually wanting to tell someone about why he didn't plan things past the next day and why he probably never would. "Spontaneity is cool."

"You don't sound all that excited about it," Rose pointed out. "Anyway, it's the person that's cool. Not what he does."

"I ever sound excited about anything?" he wondered, making a face.

"Oh yeah," she smirked. "Sometimes you sound downright gleeful."

"I don't plan things," he told her simply. "There's always something that comes along to destroy them. Why bother?"

Rose opened her mouth then shut it again. "Cause there's no other way to go anywhere."

So said the girl whose entire life plan was to protect Lissa until she got killed doing it.

"Not everyone plans like you do," he pointed out, leaning against the wall beside her. "I don't like making plans."

"Because they get destroyed?" she asked, surprisingly not flippantly at all as she turned to look at him.

"It's a safeguard," he said and shrugged. "I don't have the luxury of a bodyguard."

He might now, but it wasn't something she'd ever say to him.

"Like you'd put up with one," she said.

"Maybe I would," he answered, shrugging and almost smiling. "If they were hot and didn't get clingy."

Rose snorted. "Professional pride here, Alex. We don't do clingy."

"You said you missed me," he reminded her. "Somewhat clingy."

"You forced me to by being a gigantic ass," she retorted. "It's just cause."

"You missed me before then," he decided. "You just voiced it now."

"You missed me too," Rose told him. "So I wouldn't talk if I were you."

"You think so?" he asked, still being stubborn even if he'd given himself away with the arguing for no good reason previously.

"Well, I don't think you're stupid," she smirked. "So yeah, totally."

"I didn't think you were coming back," he admitted, dropping his eyes and scuffing his foot against the ground.
