The Pool, Saturday afternoon

Dinah opened the door to the pool and held it for Jaime, smiling. "And here we are. Pretty easy to find." She hit the lights, and grinned as the pool lit up, dropping her towel and cover-up onto a nearby chair, then kicked off her flip-flops. "High dive, low dive, lanes. Pretty much a standard pool. All rumors of sharks have yet to be anything more than stories.

Jaime used the fact that he needed to toss his own towel somewhere to distract himself from the (fortunately brief) feeling of awkward at being alone with a girl in a swimsuit.

By the time he'd gotten his towel oh-so-carefully situated, he was able to act normal. -ish. "I think the fact that sharks are even a rumor here is kind of worrying."

"It is, isn't it?" Dinah grinned and tied her braid back with an elastic band, curling it up into a bun at the nape of her neck. Way too long since she'd been here, and she gave the high-dive a speculative look. Fifteen feet or so, maybe? Not high enough to be *really* high. "Want to race?" Teasing, she added, "We can see if you can beat me at this?"

"Hey, Dinah."

Ender's greeting was easy and light as he walked into the pool area, his own towel slung lightly across his shoulder.

"Hey Ender!" Dinah greeted him, toes over the pool edge. "This is Jaime, he's new. As you'd guess." She grinned. "Did you try out for the play yet?" Assuming he would, because he'd been awesome at the last one.

"I did," Ender agreed, easily. "Last week, considering that Geoffrey isn't running any private auditions and he's out of the public variety. You?"

"Week and a half ago. I think I did well. It's hard to tell with Geoffrey sometimes, although at least he didn't yell. Having to wrangle Tony as a tiger might have thrown him off a little, though." Dinah took a breath and dove in, doing a somersault under the water, floating for a second, then floating to the surface. "You missed the party last night for Tahiri."

He shrugged one shoulder. "I wasn't invited," he said, "And I'm not going out of my way to be a party crasher."

Dinah was kind of surprised, since he was friends with Ben and Karla, but maybe he wasn't all that close to Tahiri, and she hid her wince by blowing bubbles in the water, feeling her face heat up. "Mostly it was just ice cream. A lot of it." Changing the subject, she said, "Classes going well?"

Today was a good day for a swim. Karla had thought about heading down to the beach, but a few familiar psychic scents had her heading towards the pool instead.

"Kiss kiss," she called, totally pretending to be comfortable in her bikini. These swimsuits were weird.

"Ender!" Karla called with a grin and a wave. She hadn't seen him since the Multicultural Fair. "You and Ben both have been hiding yourselves away. It's taken this long for me to finally scare you off?"

"Karla, hi hi hi!" Dinah surfaced, smiling as she blinked chlorine out of her eyes, and swam over to the edge of the pool, grinning. She remembered Karla's reactions last time; breasts were okay, but legs... "Ready to do some laps?"

"My classes have been going well so far," Ender said, smiling for a moment. "Which I think means it's about time for me to get something horribly wrong."

"Yes," Ender said, his eyebrows wiggling. "We're utterly terrified of you."

He approached, though. "Or alternatively, I haven't found myself in the position to say 'hi' lately. Hi."

Well, this was a little awkward. She'd been concentrating on Ender and Dinah's psychic scents, she hadn't really paid attention to who else was with them. Which, thinking about that now, was kind of a foolish thing to do.

"Kiss, kiss, Jaime," she said, trying to pretend that she wasn't disconcerted by seeing him. "Still not a request, don't worry."

"I dunno, I kinda like the idea that I can be terrifying," Karla teased. "It's a lovely illusion while it lasts."

Dinah laughed, and did a backwards somersault before coming back around to grin at him. "Seriously? Like what? Build a black hole?" That seemed a lot more likely as a 'mistake' here than anything else. "Or just fail a vocabulary test?"

"You don't yell at us enough," Ender said, solemnly. "It's throwing off your image."

"Or we might be invaded by something deadly in the middle of an oceanography class," he said, lightly. "But that's just the worst-case scenario."

"Sure!" Karla was actually doing a funny little dance; it was as if she was trying to hide one leg behind the other, which really wasn't working so well.

What? It was weird. "Though I'm going to do a dive or two first. You have to go really far out in the ocean to get a good depth for a proper dive, so usually it isn't worth it."

"Why don't you give me a few appropriate topics?" Karla suggested with a laugh. "I mean, I'd hate to yell about something silly, like you not getting your homework done on time."

Dinah tried hard to hide her snickers, but Karla could probably pick up on her amusement anyway. "Diving, yay! I'll join you in a minute, when I'm done with my lap." She grinned. "And applaud your swan dive from here."

"You could yell at me about not auditioning for the play until the last minute," he said, cracking a smile. "Or you could tell me how you've been."

"Actually, that's a middle-case scenario," Dinah pointed out, floating on her back and staring at the ceiling above her. "It's been three weeks since the new kids got here. I keep wondering how much longer the Island will go easy on them. Or the universe, you know?" She looked over at ender, wisps of hair floating into her face. "I mean, I think it tries to protect them, or go easy on them, that first week... but after that...."

"We all have to sit through our first round of heat," he said, and glanced at Dinah. "Read Demosthenes' article in the school paper?"

He was interested to see how the students were taking it.

"I did." Dinah straightened, treading water and thinking, her expression clouding. "I mean, I see his point, but I don't agree with it. I don't care about Portalocity, you can always find a way to get to your friends if they need help. There's a million magic users here, a zillion sciences, it's not all down to one thing."
