The Roof; Saturday Afternoon

There were several ways to indicate fall was upon you. Changing leaves, of course, would be the obvious one. You could look at a calendar, which was just a boring way to do it. Or you could check to see if Chuck Bass was wearing his trademark scarf. Which he was. It truly was the greatest time of the year.

Yep, scarf around his neck and a joint in one hand, Chuck was laid back in a chair reading Les Liaisons dangereuses for about the tenth time. It was the only way he could keep his French in check without, you know, actually going to France.

[Look, it was nippy when I went to go get the mail earlier. I declare it fall. Post is open, of course]

"Oh you don't ever have to worry about me," Chuck said, lifting up his joint. "I have many, many ways to destroy brain cells."

"You're a pretty resourceful man. That's always good to know," Kate replied. "So, what are you reading?"

"Les Liaisons dangereuses, better known as Dangerous Liaisons in English," Chuck said. "Or, if you just watch movies, meta for Cruel Intentions."

"I think my brother's read that," she said after a short pause. "And I know I've seen the movie. And a few other versions as well. You're fluent enough in French to read that?"

"I'm fluent in several languages," Chuck said. "One of the perks of private school and a jet setter's lifestyle."

"Is there anything other than perks to a life like that?"

"Hey, there's a downside or two. I'm the one that has to change my wardrobe every season in order to stay fashionable," Chuck joked.

"What a hard life you lead, Mr. Bass," she replied with an amused smile, raising an eyebrow. "It's so much easier for us who are firmly outside fashion."

And firmly in the latest teen culture fad. Whatever.

"I wish I didn't care about the way I look but no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to stop," Chuck said. "It's a curse."

"Could be worse," Kate replied, giving him an appreciative look and a liight grin. "At least it's one that others benefit from."

Chuck smirked at her. "So you've been checking me out then?"

"Kinda hard to avoid it when you're in two of my classes," Kate smirked back. "Although not so much in cooking class, because I don't want to be losing any fingers."

"Understandable," he said, snickering. "Both about the checking me out and the not wanting to cut your finger off."

"Whatever I do usually makes sense," she noted, putting out what was left of her cigarette. "Especially in cases where there's pretty or a risk of injury involved."

"So you think I'm pretty now?" Chuck asked.

Kate couldn't resist laughing a little. This was, what? The third time a guy asked her that very question at this school?

"Yes. I do think you're pretty."

"Why thank you," Chuck said, pretending to be humbled by it. "I think you're pretty too."

"Thanks, I know I am," she smirked.
